This book provides readers with an introductory understanding of Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC), a type of fusion meant to retain plasma using an electrostatic field. IEC provides a unique approach for plasma confinement, as it offers a number of spin-off applications, such as a small neutron source for Neutron Activity Analysis (NAA), that all work towards creating fusion power. The IEC has been identified in recent times as an ideal fusion power unit because of its ability to burn aneutronic fuels like p-B11 as a result of its non-Maxwellian plasma dominated by beam-like ions. This type of fusion also takes place in a simple mechanical structure small in size, which also contributes to its viability as a source of power. This book posits that the ability to study the physics of IEC in very small volume plasmas makes it possible to rapidly investigate a design to create a power-producing device on a much larger scale. Along with this hypothesis the book also includes a conceptual experiment proposed for demonstrating breakeven conditions for using p-B11 in a hydrogen plasma simulation.
This book also:
Offers an in-depth look, from introductory basics to experimental simulation, of Inertial Electrostatic Confinement, an emerging method for generating fusion power
Discusses how the Inertial Electrostatic Confinement method can be applied to other applications besides fusion through theoretical experiments in the text
Details the study of the physics of Inertial Electrostatic Confinement in small-volume plasmas and suggests that their rapid reproduction could lead to the creation of a large-scale power-producing device
Perfect for researchers and students working with nuclear fusion, Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) Fusion: Fundamentals and Applications also offers the current experimental status of IEC research, details supporting theories in the field and introduces other potential applications that stem from IEC.

Successful Using Fusion Energy
By Prof Heinrich Hora
At handable scale, nuclear fusion reactions can be produced by Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) in difference to the large scale and very expensive research for energy production by billion dollar facilities with magnetic confinement or using lasers. The generated neutrons are controllable and on sufficiently low level for avoiding dangerous nuclear radiation. These instruments are useful for detection of explosives, chemical analytic methods and finally to produce small numbers of isotopes for medical purposes. The long-years pioneer on IEC, George Miley, together with a highly familiar expert, S.K. Murali are presenting the first very comprehensive monograph of this field which can especially be praised also as success for the Springer publisher. It covers all known details of this field from the very beginning and how the very numerous problems were solved for nuclear fusion reactions of ions up to about the range of 100 keV energy operating in a nearly field-free spherical or cylindrical volume with only a low density of low temperature electrons such that the problems of bremsstrahlung losses as usual in fusion plasmas are practical eliminated. The scheme goes back to P.J. Farnsworth and R.L. Hirsch but earlier sources even go back to the Russian Nobel Laureate Peter Kapitza. A number of later modifications are summarized. A lot of attention is given to the generated virtual cathode structures. One of the problems are the electric potentials around the wire grids for producing the high electric potentials (p. 78) where a modification of the potentials for very much higher gains is possible by lamellar electrodes or even with potential modified lamellas (p. 258). The increase of the gains by a factor 10 to 100 has been mentioned (reference Miley et al. Amer. J. Appl. Sci. 2 (2005) 1520). The use of the IEC as controllable neutron source in the very save working subcritical nuclear fission reactors found attention by Carlo Rubbia and Robert Dautray und could have been used in the research large reactor Garching II, which finally uses the very expensive operation with californium isotopes. The book is the back bone for the rather large number of the experts on IEC but it is an example for teaching and information to students about a powerfully developed field of plasma physics and technology.

Well written with great content, but like every Springer published book I have purchased is over priced and so poorly bound the pages began falling out when first opened.

What took so long?
By Domeontherange
Perhaps the most surprising thing about this book is that it took so long for someone to publish a thorough presentation of the subject. IEC to produce deuterium-tritium fusion reactions has been around for many years, with the original plasmoid devices studied for decades. Perhaps the appearance of this book only now is due to the greatly renewed interest in IEC by the mainstream fusion research community because of the developing pessimism surround the 'big government' approaches using laser or tokamak designs, as well as the increasing realization that proton-boron fusion (MUCH safer!) with net energy production is achievable using an IEC based device. I expect more books in the near future because of the blooming of research in this area. This book is a REAL good start for technically minded interested persons.
