The Book is Good, But the Movie is Better

The Tall Stranger by Louis L'Amour is well worth reading, but the movie starring Joel McCrea is better. As I have previously stated in other reviews of L'Amour's work, his early novels are his best, with one or two exceptions. In the beginning he was only concerned about telling us a good story, but in later years began to philosophize until it reached a point where it interferred with his story telling ability. I know most authors have something they want to say in their work which they want us to understand and agree with, but they can get carried away, and when there is no editorial advice provided to check this urge it can run amok. But there is none of that in this book; it is story telling at its best.

Nice Handbook

This should be the book in a class required for all chemical engineers, and they should be bound to the equivalent of an engineer's Hippocratic Oath after reading it.

Do not expect detailed process diagrams on how to sustainably produce plastics and other products, but do expect short and concise guidelines and considerations for the production of things from a life cycle perspective. An engineer might be deeply interested in producing a material with some key ingredients to make it stronger and cheaper, but the last 60 years have shown us that this kind of myopic progress leaves a trail of waste and health hazards behind it. This book addresses that concern by outlining considerations for making things, achieving the purpose of their manufacture, yet also considering the lasting impact in a cradle-to-grave life cycle. The principles are sound and do not interfere with the engineering process, but instead add to it.

Classic Nicole Jordan

This book was really good. It's one of Jordan's earliest pieces and this was reflected in the content of the book. However, this in no way takes away from how great the book was. The characters were likeable and fun to read about.
I especially liked the male hero, Raith. His character was developed so well and I was there with him every step he took. The emotional intensity and feelings between the main characters was electric. I reccommend this book. Buy it!

Not high on my list

Nothing irritates me any more than for the lead characters to constantly be pecking one another. Anger at one another, deliberately ignoring the fact that the other person (on both sides) has answered questions, made efforts, etc. How dumb can people be? I don't read books to be annoyed with the people I am supposed to admire. Why can they not joint together to fight an outside force? The premise is beyond irritating. I read this one because I really enjoyed the last book by Nicole Jordan and am so disappointed by this one. It did end well, and I did manage not to throw my Kindle across the room, but only barely!!!!!~

Enjoyed it! Bought and read in one day

I have read books by this author before, so her writing style is familiar. I enjoyed this book, read it in one day. It was .99 cents, and worth much more. This is a substantial story, not a short cheap read.

I liked the main characters, and how they slowly fell together. I also liked the secondary characters, and their relationships. I also have to say that i was so happy to see an epilogue. The ending was worth it.

If I had any dislikes, they were minor. I didn't give it 5 stars because I wish the main characters had spent a little more time together and had more conversations. The realization that they loved each other was a bit fast. Still, it wasn't so fast that it ruined the story like so many I have read.

I'm pretty picky about my authors, but I have never found one by this author that I didn't like. I recommend
this book for anyone who likes historical romance. For this price, you can't beat it.

What a difference 4 years mad

I really enjoyed this 1st of a series. I'm sure you know that this is based on George Lucas' rough draft treaty of what would become Star Wars episode IV, so I won't bore you with the details of that. What I will say is the 1st issue setting the stage for the rest of the series, kind of like "The Phantom Menace" was supposed to do, thankfully minus JarJar Binks or anyone/thing like him. It's really kind of neat to see what he had in mind in the first place, like I said earlier the fist issue is setting the stage, and I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Tantalizing story line. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and an old comic collector. This however, is the first one I've bought in many, many years and I'm glad I did.

Ah, [The] Star Wars!

I've been a Star Wars fan for years! I loved the original movies and I even studied a draft of The Star Wars script in a screenwriting class in college. When I saw that people made a comic of the original story idea, I jumped at the chance to read it. I love how the story started out so different from what we saw on film. It shows the creative process. Any Star Wars fan who wants to see "what could have been", this is a chance for you.

About the Author

Joel Henry managed the design studio software development teams at East Tenneessee State University before joining the faculty at the University of Montana where he's currently an associate professor of computer science. Good as a textbook, lacking for real-world engineers

If I were back in school and knew nothing of what I've learned from working, this would be an excellent book. It's an engaging read, covers a variety of important topics at both an appropriate and realistic level, and also provides some concrete methodology suggestions.

However, without the supplementation of a lecture & exercise format, much of this isn't immediately useful for practicing engineers. To really "get" the lessons, you would likely need either anecdotal stories or real-world case study data presented. Most great software engineering books lean towards the former, since the latter requires help from a Real Human to get the most value you of. This book - geared towards an educational environment - leans towards the case study data.

Also, since it's more of a broad overview than an in-depth study of a particular area of software project management (planning, methodology, people management, political work, etc.), it doesn't even give quite enough of a survey of techniques to dig deeper. At least, it would've been nice to point at a few of the introductory pieces of work or the landscape of available choices. Instead, this book usually paints a broad picture (i.e. "use the appropriate methodology for the team size") and then talks about one specific way of solving the problem (TSP/PSP).

Still, if I were back in school, I would be happy to have this as a textbook - provided I had an instructor who could fill in the gaps.

Good Hands On Advice for the First Timer

In reviewing several texts for a project managment class I will be instructing, I found Mr. Henry's the most succinct in addressing "real world" issues. He sets a realistic tone by focusing on a project's culture and its relationship to processes and tools. The text is not loaded down with unproven theory, and each suggested technique or approach is backed up by the author's personal observation, research or solid references. Henry's discussion on process creation is a realistic one, and I like the fact that he doesn't get religious about any particular approach.
I believe the text provides a good framework to base a course on, but I would have preferred a stronger emphasis on software architecture and its impact on team productivity. The author gives light treatment to this under a section for quality. Also, while testing is discussed and a rudimentary outline of a testing plan is provided, I would have preferred more treatment of techniques in managing followup as well as the considerations in migrating corrections when further work has been done in other areas of development (i.e. regression testing strategy).
Overall, though, this text provides a good start for experienced software engineers running a project for the first time. While the discussion on hardware and software considerations is brief, it highlights an essential check list that is sufficient for an experienced engineer to consider. The price of the book is competitive, but like many of the books in this subject area, I believe the price is a bit much to ask of students.

About the Author
Dr. David Norris has done research in environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for more than 50 years. Dr. Norris is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado. He received his bachelor’s degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and his Ph.D. in 1966 from the University of Washington. Dr. Norris has worked in the area of forensic botany with Dr. Jane H. Bock, since 1982, primarily on developing the use of plant cells in the gastrointestinal tract to aid in homicide investigations. Dr. Norris and Dr. Bock have been involved in investigations in numerous states as well as throughout the State of Colorado. Dr. Norris has been certified as an expert witness in this area for the State of Colorado. With Dr. Bock, Dr. Norris also has consulted on other botanical evidence for criminal investigations. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in 2014.

Dr. James A. Carr is a Professor of Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University. His research has focused on various aspects of environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for 25 years including the effects of opioid peptides on brainstem, cardiovascular areas and pituitary hormone secretion, the impact of environmental pollutants on the thyroid and reproductive axes in fishes and amphibians, and the impact of stress hormones on subcortical visual pathways involved in feeding.

The 4th is better

If you are taking a class that requires this book, but says to get the fifth edition, don't get the fifth edition. The fourth edition has the same images and same information that was just moved around and the price is unbeatable. I will say that the company, Sharp Books, was great for their pricing and reasonable people to deal with, plus the shipping was rather fast. Though this book was not what I wanted, I would shop from them again
