A Toolbox of Information

I recently saw the author fly a Phantom 3 Professional over Fort San Lorenzo, a UNESCO Heritage site on the shores of Panama and also over a remote rainforest village in Panama's Darian Province. Watching drones in action inspired me to learn more about their applications, especially the types of comparative maps generated by drones.

This book teaches readers:
1) about aerial photogrammetry (which benefits from a new generation of software for cameras placed on drones),
2) how to prepare a variety of flight plans, and gear up in a light or low cost way,
3) how to fly, photograph, and process images and stitch them together into maps, and also,
4) there is a helpful comparison of the best drones available for mapping purposes.

It provides the information to create your own drone-based map mosaics for areas and times of your choosing. It is a practical field guide for drone-flying novices and will enhance the skills of experienced enthusiasts. Every page has helpful diagrams or insightful photos.

As a doctor, I am very curious about the use of UAV technology in humanitarian response and first crisis. I have found this book to be a great introduction to the complex world of drone mapping, providing the basis to understand the potential of this growing industry. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is willing to expand their knowledge.

Field guides for photogrammetry are rare, and it's great that Mr. Calvo (you can't use his first name in an Amazon review!) has taken the time to put this book together. It's a good overview of photogrammetry using fixed-wing and multirotor drones, but needs to be supplemented with additional research once one decides on an aerial platform to fly and software for processing. Think of the book as a high-level primer on the topic rather than an in-depth dive. It's extremely image heavy, and I often wanted more text to clarify and discuss points in greater detail, especially when technical terms are mentioned casually and without explanation. One other issue is that the organization and layout can be distracting; the content is good, but the layout can get in the way. Still, I recommend this book if you have been curious about photogrammetry and are looking for a way to get started.

About the Author

Kathleen O'Neal Gear is a former state historian and archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska for the U.S. Department of the Interior. She has twice received the federal government's Special Achievement Award for ""outstanding management"" of our nation's cultural heritage.

W. Michael Gear holds a master's degree in archaeology and has worked as a professional archaeologist since 1978. He is principal investigator for Wind River Archaeological Consultants.

Together they have written the North America's Forgotten Past series (People of the Morning Star, People of the Songtrail, People of the Mist, People of the Wolf, among others); and the Anasazi Mysteries series. The Gears live in Thermopolis, WY.

Exceptional Series

The Gears have done it again. Each book of the series, including this one, kept me sitting on the edge of my chair from the first cover to the final pages. They have a way of bringing excitement and suspense into every story. I highly recommend any of the Gear's books for anyone interested in archeology, Native Americans, or just a really good story. I'ave also found that their books have parallels to what is going on in the world and in the nation, today and leave me with things to think about. I'm anxiously awaiting their next book.

I haven't finished the book yet, but as is usual with the Gears books it is a page turner. You are right there suffering with the people, rejoicing with them, understanding all that they are feeling. The Gears give you so much information about the people and the lives they live that you feel you understand exactly what it was like to live in their time period. Anyone interested in the lives of the early Americans will enjoy this book and any of the books by the Gears. At times you would like to be there and live the lives they live, close to nature and in tune with all that is around you.

Dr. Avolio has an international reputation as a researcher and practitioner in leadership. He has consulted with public and private organizations in North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and Israel. His research and consulting includes work with the militaries of the United States of America, Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Israel, and South Africa.

Dr. Avolio is a fellow of the Academy of Management, American Psychological Society, American Psychological Association and the Gerontological Society. He is the former President of the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation and the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management.

Dr. Avolio has published 10 books and over a 125 articles on leadership and related areas. His books include "Transformational and Charismatic Leadership: The Road Ahead" (Elsevier Science, 2002), "Full Leadership Development: Building the Vital Forces in Organizations" (Sage Publications, 1999), and "Developing Potential Across a Full Range of Leadership: Cases on Transactional and Transformational Leadership "(Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000). A MASTERFUL BOOK ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT!

At the outset, Avolio asserts that leadership is both made and born; a person's beliefs about leadership can, however, become self-fulfilling and self-limiting. Learning and leading must go hand in hand for a person to achieve his/her full leadership potential. Thankfully, this author believes that the development of authentic leadership is more profound than a listing of do's and don'ts; he is true to his ambition. In each chapter Avolio discusses one main concept that makes up an overall model of leadership development with the aim of conveying a new model for the reader. The context of the model is each person's life stream-events that shape their views, used to lead others. The key elements are 1) a person's self and possible self (perspective of self), 2) perspective of others, 3) using feedback to adjust behavior, 4) mistakes and trust, and 5) the merging of leadership and technology. Avolio then looks at the state-of-art of leadership development today, examines strategic leadership development, and presents a model that predicts performance and can be used for development. The final chapter provides supporting research for each preceding chapter. The hallmark of this book is its in-depth treatment of the subject. It is loaded with rich content. This is a masterful work on an complex subject.

Nice book but...

This book is typical of what is coming out of the Ivory Tower these days; soft, lukewarm mush, served up by the 50-something virtuecrats too acquiescent to challenge the reigning bobble-heads of the Status Quo and their minion of Thought Police. Albeit well written and somewhat engaging, Leadership Development in Balance Born/Made is conditioned to ignore the historic implications that hard core idealism and practical application are mutually exclusive.

The book's overall compass points leadership development towards a holistic direction (e.g., positive self-absorptions relating to self and other; AAR, perspectives, perceptions, debriefing, reflections, etc., for the good of the collective whole). However, one becomes discerningly aware that it is geared only towards the elite who, as suggested throughout the book, seem effectually challenged by the growing complexities of today's global economies, diverse cultures and social systems. Avolio stresses altruism and selflessness as the cornerstone of leadership development and although a fetching concept, it will be some time before beneficent leadership trends emerge such as leaders nailing themselves to the corporate cross for the good of their followers, organizations, and communities. Perhaps only a minute fraction submits to the idea of output without incentives as being above the bottom line, but in almost all cases, selflessness is an abstraction which goes against the constructs of the human genome in spite of what the idealists will tell you (remember, they are the ones earning the 6-figure incomes!).

Some of the ideas presented in the book sounded familiar, while many are still in the same old, same old mode-and that is too bad. Certain points could have been fleshed out to produce cutting edge initiatives, yet I hesitate to elaborate on their specifics since it appears, allegedly, that the author's Well of Originality has hit rock bottom; an inevitable outcome characteristic of anyone involved in one discipline for an extended period of time.

About the Author

Rose Weitz is Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. She is the author of several books, including The Sociology of Health, Illness, and Health Care: A Critical Approach (2012) and Rapunzel's Daughters: What Women's Hair Tells Us About Women's Lives (2004).

Samantha Kwan is Associate Professor of Sociology and a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies faculty affiliate at the University of Houston. She is coauthor of Framing Fat: Competing Constructions in Contemporary Culture (2013) and coeditor of Embodied Resistance: Challenging the Norms, Breaking the Rules (2011).

Good information, but very detailed and out of date

Overall I found this book to provide a myriad of information. I was excited about office design and all of the aspects concerning this area. In many regards the book is out of date - computers, especially. But the concepts of chair design were particularly well presented. Much of the information was very detailed - noise, illumination, displays. I was, however, impressed with the amount of research the authors did by the way they cited the vast amount of research in each of the various sections. Also, they did keep their sense of humor and acknowledged the real world in their analysis.

Great beginners manual for breadth of Human Factors

This book is an excellent beginner's manual for Human Factors. It is used in several college's Human Factor's initial courses.
The topics it covers are the basic "physical" human factors topics. There is breadth but not depth. However it does not do much with UI design. There is nothing on Web design or computer station design.
This book's data is limited to examples that illustrate various points in the book. If you need detailed anthropometric data or workspace recoommendations you won't find it here.
Alan Cooper's book About face can help you with the UI part.
Jakob Nielson's Web Usability or Steve Krug's Don't make me think book can give you information on Web design.
Woodson's Human Factors Design Handbook can help you with the computer station part. At lot of money for just this though.
If you need detailed anthropmetric date, the sources I am most familiar with are:
Human Factors Design Handbook by Woodson(though it is a biased sample, if this is all you can get it is better than nothing) Woodson's newer book (2nd edition) gives computer station information, but is pricey for just this.
The measure of Man and Woman by Henry Dreyfuss and Associates (dated in 1970s)
BodySpace by Stephen Pheasant (in metric)
International data on Anthropometry by Hans W. Jurgens (gives you some international data found nowhere else).

very good introduction

In my opinion, this book is a great introduction to the field of ergonomics and human factors. Though it is indeed a bit older, all necessary fields are covered with great diligence (Information inout & processing, human output & control, workplace design, environmental conditions & human factors applications). Of course the passages concerning VDUs and computers are outdated, but these passages comprise only a very small part of the book (and, to be honest, if I want to read about these topics I would pick different books anyway!). The authors write in a very comprehensible way and many examples and pictures underline the usability of the book. To summarize, a book that is outdated concerning the most recent computer technologies (VDU etc.), but a great introduction containing everything necessary to human factors and design (and these sections are NOT outdated, as the reader before says very poignantly: "Computers may change, people DON'T change that easily).

About the Author
CHARLES HODGE (1797–1878) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Princeton College and Princeton Seminary. He married Sarah Bache, great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin in 1822. He was a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary most of his life. He founded the “Biblical Repertory and Princeton Review.” He is known for his Calvinistic teachings published in his well-known “Systematic Theology.”

A kinder, gentler Charle Hodge

Here is Hodge writing for adult Sunday School students on the basics of Christian life. Strong emphasis on our need for a Savior, and the gift of justification. Note: this edition is hard to read, because it's a photocopy of the original British version. It is missing a couple of pages. I recommend that you spend more to get the Paulist edition which has a fine introduction by Mark Noll.

Charles Hodge has a way of writing that makes reading theology is easy and understandable. very good for individual, personal growth.
