The Land of Five Towers, by Ahmad Fuadi

a novel inspired by a true story (English Edition) Synopsis: Alif had never set foot outside of West Sumatra. He passed his childhood days searching for fallen durian fruit in the jungle, playing soccer on rice paddies, and swimming in the blue waters of Lake Maninjau. His mother wants him to attend an Islamic boarding school, a pesantren, while he dreams of public high school. Halfheartedly, he follows his mother’s wishes. He finds himself on a grueling three-day bus ride from Sumatra to Madani Pesantren (MP) in a remote village on Java. On his first day at MP, Alif is captivated by the powerful phrase man jadda wajada. He who gives his all will surely succeed. United by punishment, he quickly becomes friends with five boys from across the archipelago, and together they become known as the Fellowship of the Manara. Beneath the mosque’s minaret, the boys gaze at the clouds on the horizon, seeing in them their individual dreams of far-away lands, like America and Europe. Where would these dreams take them? They didn’t know. What they did know was: never underestimate dreams, no matter how high they may be. God truly is The Listener. The Land of 5 Towers is the first book in a trilogy written by A. Fuadi—a former TEMPO & VOA reporter, photography buff, and a social entrepreneur. He went to George Washington University and Royal Holloway, University of London for his masters. A portion of the royalties from the trilogy are intended to build Komunitas Menara, a volunteer-based social organization which aims to provide free schools, libraries, clinics and soup kitchens for the less fortunate. About the Author
From Journalist to Novelist, from Sumatra to America Ahmad Fuadi was born in Bayur, a small village on the edge of Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, in 1972 . Fuadi traveled to Java to fulfill his mother’s request that he attend a religious school. At Pondok Modern Gontor (Gontor Modern Pesantren), he met kiai and ustad who were blessed with sincerity to teach knowledge of this world and the next. Gontor also taught him the simple yet powerful mantra, man jadda wajada—he who gives his all will surely succeed. Upon graduating with a degree in International Relations from Padjadjaran University, he became a journalist for Tempo magazine. His first class in journalism was done in reporting assignments under the guidance of senior Tempo journalists. In 1999, he received a Fulbright scholarship to take his master’s degree at the School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University, USA. Venturing to Washington, D.C. together with Yayi, his wife—also a Tempo journalist—was a childhood dream come true. While studying, they were also Tempo correspondents and reporters for Voice of America (VOA). They reported on historical news, such as the 9-11 tragedy, straight from the Pentagon, White House, and Capitol Hill. In 2004, another world window opened when he received the Chevening Award scholarship to study documentary films at Royal Holloway, University of London. As a scholarship hunter, Fuadi is always enthusiastic to continue his education and find more scholarships. He has had opportunities to live and study in Canada, Singapore, USA, and the UK. This photography buff has served as the Director of Communication for The Nature Conservancy, an international conservation NGO. Currently, Fuadi is busy writing, being a speaker and motivator locally and internationally, and building a social foundation to aid in the education of the underprivileged—Komunitas Menara. Negeri 5 Menara (The Land of Five Towers) has won several awards, including the 2010 Khatulistiwa Literary Award (Long List) and the 2010 Favorite Fiction Writer and Book from the Indonesian Readers Awards. Fantastic Read!
By Lauren
As a US reader with interests in Indonesia, The Land of Five Towers was a very eye-opening and fascinating read. The inner-battle the main character Alif has between wanting to please Amak (his mother) by attending a Muslim boarding school (pesantren), yet still dreaming about going to public high school is a story US readers and American youth can definitely relate to and draw relationships to their own life experiences. Reading the translation has been so fascinating for me because Indonesian writing style very artistic and not as sequentially fluid US fiction. I found that the artistic quality of the book is what makes the translation so beautiful and a memorable read for American readers like myself.

Indonesian Islamic education
By Mr. Gelek
The book is the fictionalized account of the author's middle- and high school days in a Muslim boarding school in East Java. Lots of insight into modern "pesantren" education -- the deracination of ethnic groups from around Indonesia, the creation of a new post-national cosmopolitan identity. There's a particular focus on Minangkabau culture. Read this alongside Muhammad Radjab's "Village Childhood" (in Rodgers' Telling Lives, Telling History: Autobiography and Historical Imagination in Modern Indonesia). And great to see Gramedia making its books available on Amazon.

Mesmerizing!
By Denny
The Land of five towers by A. Fuadi is about friendship and growing up. The book explains the place so well you feel like you are in the story. The start will make you read more, the middle makes you wish you were them, and the end you might make you wish you had friends like his. Making decisions by yourself can get you far, but helping one another can get you further. I love how the kids learn three languages and cultures. This is a must read. Can't wait for the full trilogy! (Linus Abhyasa Wicaksana, 11 year-old)

A Master Passion, The story of Alexander and Elizabeth Hamilton, by Juliet Waldron

A Master Passion is the story of the marriage - called by some a misalliance - of Alexander Hamilton, our First Secretary of the Treasury, and Betsy Schuyler. Although born poor and illegitimate, Hamilton courts the daughter of Major General Schuyler, an American princess. Hamilton is one of a trinity of Founders who seem to have been created on purpose to invent our nation. Like all mission-driven men, he is preoccupied, often absent, and not the best provider. The trials of making ends meet and raising an ever growing troop of children are Betsy's. This woman-behind-the-man is barely known, but through war, Indian attacks, multiple births, epidemics, infidelity, unending politics and dire tragedy, Betsy is the force which holds the family together. Conflict is built into this marriage. It does not simply spring from Alexander's childhood experience of bastardy, abuse and abandonment. To quote Alexander Pope, his favorite poet: And hence one master passion in the breast, Like Aaron's serpent, swallows up the rest. Betsy's passion is Alexander, but, sometimes, even more than this wife, Alexander loves America.

HAMILTON LIVES!
By Patricia A. Martin
I have been a fan of Ms. Waldron's writing since she arrived on Amazon, and her newest book, The Master Passion, has been worth waiting for. So many authors simply rehash old facts, trying to respin history ... Ms. Waldron revisits Alexander Hamilton as we have never seen him, and he becomes true flesh and blood, not simply a figure of the past. Her research is clearly impeccable, and she has been able to give full voice to characters seldom (if ever) written about in Hamilton's life. He was truly a tortured soul, but no more than any other passionate, driven man (or woman, for that matter, as Kostanze in Mozart's Wife, or Genesee, in the book by the same name). The reader is treated to the early years of Hamilton's life, and the burden of being truly a bastard in the days when it really mattered. His lifelong journey from an unwanted child to a founding father becomes an adventure that lasts through the final chapter. Kudos to Ms. Waldron, and thanks from one of her legion of fans.

To Master Passions In Us All
By Frank Talaber
Juliet's writing pulled me right in. Her research is amazing and detailed, I thought I was there in the 1700's. The romance and how intricate it was to have one, let alone behave in public is wonderful. In addition it made me realize just how far civilization and human rights have come since then. It also made me realize why driven men like Hamilton did what they did to make the free country called America. Also the courage of Betsy to love and want a man like him, shows that women can be as driven as the men are. Excellent book, especially for anyone reading up on early American history.

Love and Liberty” has as its central character is a ...
By Kathy Fischer Brown
As she did in “Mozart’s Wife,” “My Mozart,” and (to a lesser extent) “Roan Rose,” Juliet Waldron has created another exquisite piece of biofic about an extraordinary man and the extraordinary woman in his life.

“The Master Passion: Love and Liberty” has as its central character is a Founding Father and the man whose portrait graces the US ten dollar bill. Any child who’s studied American History knows of Alexander Hamilton’s tragic end, the fatal duel with Aaron Burr in Weehawken, NJ in July, 1804. This book portrays him as a passionate flesh and blood man of deep principles with burning desires, and foibles to match.

The bastard son of a “fallen woman,” Hamilton grows up attending the School of Hard Knocks on St. Croix in the West Indies. With an acute intelligence and a desire to rise above his early circumstances, he goes on to attend King’s College in the colony of New York on a “scholarship” before spending those funds to equip an artillery unit at the outbreak of the American Revolution. During the pivotal Battle of Trenton, young Hamilton captures the eye of his Commander in Chief, leading to his promotion and a position as one of Washington’s aides de camp.

While serving in this capacity at Morristown, NJ during the winter of 1779-80, he meets and falls in love with Elizabeth (Betsy) Schuyler, daughter of General Philip Schuyler and Catherine Van Rensselaer, both of old and wealthy Dutch New York families.

Through Betsy’s eyes, Ms. Waldron presents a balanced and imaginative view of Hamilton. He is a brilliant, ambitious young man with a great vision for his adopted country who becomes a major player in the formation of a new republic. Alternately, like Mozart, he is a husband and lover who struggles with the more mundane aspects of his life.

I recommend this book not just as an example of how impeccable research can be incorporated into a work of fiction that is vibrant and alive, but for presenting actual characters in a highly enjoyable read. I look forward to the story's conclusion in the second book in the series.

The Ethnic Myth: Race, Ethnicity, and Class in America, by Stephen Steinberg

You hold in your hand a dangerous book. Because it rejects as it clarifies most of the current wisdom on race, ethnicity, and immigration in the United States, The Ethnic Myth has the force of a scholarly bomb. --from the Introduction by Eric William Lott

In this classic work, sociologist Stephen Steinberg rejects the prevailing view that cultural values and ethnic traits are the primary determinants of the economic destiny of racial and ethnic groups in America. He argues that locality, class conflict, selective migration, and other historical and economic factors play a far larger role not only in producing inequalities but in maintaining them as well, thus providing an insightful explanation into why some groups are successful in their pursuit of the American dream and others are not.

Review
It is refreshing to read a sociological work that combines elegant prose with a powerful and provocative analysis of a major contemporary problem. . . . The uncovering of the real meaning of . . . differences among American ethnic groups requires a comprehensive historical discussion of the . . . factors that have shaped the ethnic class structure. To launch such a discussion, I cannot think of a better book to recommend than The Ethnic Myth.--Contemporary Sociology

"The Ethnic Myth is . . . useful for the clarity and persuasiveness with which it integrates existing criticisms of ethnic pluralism, for the competent manner in which it summarizes the economic forces that shaped the development of America's ethnic groups, and for the robust good sense with which it disentangles and explains the complexities of race, class, and ethnicity."--The New York Times Book Review

About the Author
Stephen Steinberg, author of The Ethnic Myth, teaches in the Department of Urban Studies at Queens College and the Ph.D. program in sociology at the Graduate Center at City University of New York.

May completely alter your view of ethnicity and America itself
By Danielle L. Petty
This is a highly readable, groundbreaking book that exposes the shallowness of many of the ethnic stereotypes we still hold in America. The core of the book critiques what Steinberg calls "the Horatio Alger myth of ethnic success" which argues that the success (or lack thereof) of ethnic groups in America is the result of cultural values. Horatio Alger was a popular author who wrote books in which the heroes overcame adversity with hard-work, common sense, and determination, i.e. middle class values. American society praises certain ethnic groups as "ethnic heroes" because it is claimed that they overcame so much and achieved success by virtue of having more American, middle-class values than other cultures.

Values-based stereotypes include "Jewish people are successful because they value education" or "Japanese-Americans are hard-working and determined, and this is why they are successful". There is no debate that some ethnic groups have been more successful than others or were successful sooner than others, but Steinberg argues (and in my opinion, proves) that these differences in outcome arose from differences in circumstances both before and after they came to America, not differences in cultural values.

First, Steinberg gives a thorough history of how America came to be so ethnically diverse (it's not because the American founders valued pluralism and equality for diverse peoples, though this is the myth we tell ourselves). Next, he demonstrates just how pervasive the "cultural values = success" trope is amongst social scientists, journalists, historians, politicians, and regular Americans. He debunks this myth by using primary sources and statistical analysis to demonstrate that groups differed in circumstances (not values) which led to different economic outcomes. For example, Irish female immigrants were more likely to become maids, not because they lacked the pride that prevented Italians and Jews from serving others, but because they were more likely to be single and had to provide for themselves. He also provides a devastating account of how the North and South colluded during the post-Civil War period to keep blacks living in near-slavery conditions and prevent their economic advancement.

Steinberg also exposes the reason why we hold onto the ethnic myth: so we can have ethnic heroes to validate our disdain for the unsuccessful ethnic villains (African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, etc). We want to believe that anyone can achieve the American Dream, but we fail to understand why so many did not and still cannot.

No Known Grave (Tom Tyler Mystery Series), by Maureen Jennings

From the well-known author whose books inspired the wildly popular Murdoch Mysteries TV series, comes the third WWII-era DI Tom Tyler mystery; for fans of Foyle's War, wartime dramas, and, of course, Maureen Jennings!
It's summer, 1942, and after a tough couple of years, DI Tom Tyler is making a fresh start in Ludlow, Shropshire. On the outskirts of town, St. Anne's Convalescent Hospital, staffed by nursing sisters who are Anglican nuns, has been established in an old manor house to help victims of the war to recover. After a horrifying double murder is discovered on the grounds, Tyler must figure out how the crime could have occurred in such a secluded and presumably impenetrable place, where most of the patients are unable to walk or are blind, or both, not to mention deeply traumatized.
To add to the puzzle, Tyler begins almost immediately to receive mysterious letters recounting terrible crimes far away. He realizes that he is not only seeking the murderer, but that the horrors of the war are closing in on this place that was meant to be a refuge.
Maureen Jennings, beloved author of the Murdoch novels that inspired the popular TV series (known as The Artful Detective in the US), surpasses herself in this vivid portrayal of wartime Britain, brilliantly blending a classic murder mystery with a deeply human story of how the effects of war live on far from the fields of battle.

Third book in the series...
By Jill Meyer
Readers of mysteries know that there are different styles within the genre. One of those are the "murders done in a confined space and almost anyone can be the murderer (and the victim, come to that!); sort of like "Murder on the Orient Express". "No Known Grave", by Maureen Jennings, is the third in her "Tom Tyler" series and offers exactly that plot and a similar cast of potential victims and murderers.

The "Tom Tyler" series is set in WW2 England. I have not read the first two - though I think I will do so - but the protagonist is a "Great War" veteran who is working as a country policeman during the war years. He has moved to a small town, Ludlow, and in his third day in town and on the job, he is called in to investigate a murder of a blind man and his son at a convalescent hospital. Among the patients at this closed hospital are men and women grievously wounded in the war - either in battle or in bombing raids at home. Most of the patients are blinded and amputees; they are being cared for at a "stately home" set up to provide recovery services. The convalescent home is run by an order of Anglican Sisters, who are also nurses.

Jennings does an excellent job at setting up her time and place. St Anne's, the secluded home, is distant enough from the battles and bombings, but close enough to the emotional anguish and physical frailties that the war has brought. Why are such disparate people as the blind father and his son and the old nursing nun cut down in violent fashion? What do a series of letters sent to Tom Tyler describing massacres in an unnamed place, where the murdered "have no graves", do with the these murders?

"No Known Grave" is a good look at war-time England where police work still needs to be done. Maureen Jennings has written a good, insightful mystery.

Murder in the midst of the severely disabled
By Patto
This is an amazing setting for a murder mystery – a World War II hospital run by Anglican nuns who are nursing shell-shocked patients with horrible scars and mutilations. Some are in wheelchairs. Some are blind. Most are severely traumatized. We get to know them all when Detective Inspector Tom Tyler arrives to investigate the murder of a staff member and one of his sons.

Sergeant McHattie was gassed and blinded in the Great War. He was a good man teaching some of the patients massage, which it was hoped might be a viable career for them. Tyler finds it hard to imagine why anyone would want to kill the man, let alone kill his teenage son. When more tragedies ensue, Tyler is really stumped.

The atmosphere of the hospital, and the personalities of the nuns, are all very fascinating. Among the many constables, one is particularly interesting – a young woman who drives a motorcycle at maniacal speeds, speaks with an upper crust accent, and shows promise as a detective. Women were new to the police force at that time, and even the liberal-minded Tyler is not always sure how to treat her.

A romance blossoms among the disfigured patients, and this is a charming diversion.

Although I found the motive for the crimes a bit astounding, I enjoyed the investigation and got very caught up in the experiences of the characters.

A real page turner!
By Macs mom
Terrific book. Great plot and a wonderful rendering of an awful incident in WWII history. Jennings characters are well drawn and as the Globe and Mail said, it does remind you of Foyle's War--how the incidents of the battlefield reach back into the homefront. Set in a hospital for badly scarred (both emotionally and physically) patients in Ludlow run by Anglican nuns, the story centers on three murders and a kidnapping and reaches a climax in a Norman era church, tied up neatly with a twisted plot involving the assassination of Reinhart Heydrich and the murders in a razing of the town of Lidice in Czechoslovakia by the Gestapo in retaliation.

Review

“Knitting teacher and fiber artist Bestor turns this deceptively simple topic into a fascinating read… This is a great reference for the knitter looking to customize her own projects, and is an ideal companion for anyone who dares to try her own hand at design.”

(The Oregonian)

“In the era of YouTube, how useful is a print guide to knitting cast-ons and bind-offs? Very, especially if you’re designing your own knits, looking for alternate cast-ons or bind-offs to change an existing pattern, or trying to choose among a variety of options in a pattern. [Leslie Ann Bestor’s] collection is comprehensive and well organized, and the directions are easy to follow.”

(The Oregonian)

“This spiral-bound book is a gem, chock-full of techniques to improve your knitting projects from start to finish. I love the organization of the book ...In addition to the handy spiral binding - so great when you’re trying to follow along - there are photos of every step of the techniques, plus photos of projects using the techniques. Paws up!" ― Austin American Statesman's knitting blog, Knittin' Kitten

(Judy Becker, Author of Beyond Toes: Knitting Adventures with Judy’s Magic Cast-On)

“The very best knitting books are the ones that educate, inspire and open up new knitting worlds. As so it is with "Cast On, Bind Off," a terrific new reference book that walks knitters through more than 50 -- I'll repeat that, because it merits it -- more than 50 ways to start and end your projects. … And that, folks, is why every blessed one of us needs this book. Like, now. … I've seen a number of these techniques elsewhere, but never all of them together, and absolutely never in such a clear, easy-to-use format. This is a must for any knitter's library. You'll go back to it time and again, and you'll never again have a glorious project wrecked by the wrong technique. (Anyone who's ended up with a too-tight bind off on a sweater neck knows what I'm talking about.) Buy the book. Your knitting will thank you, and you'll thank Leslie Ann Bestor for writing "Cast On, Bind Off."” ―The Oregonian’s knitting blog, OregonLive.com

(Margaret Radcliffe, knitting designer, teacher, and author of Circular Knitting Workshop)

“Step-by-step instructions and accompanying close-up photographs are the perfect format for this go-to guide. You’ll be amazed at what you’ve been missing!”

Glorified reference book, not a how-to
By Cheeke Maroo
I was excited when I saw this book coming out and pre-ordered it. I am sort of glad to have it in my library, but only as a quick-glance reference list. I do not think it is at all good for *learning* specific cast-ons/bind-offs, though it touts itself as a step-by-step guide.

Pros:
- Spiral bound
- Each CO/BO has a list of "Characteristics" (i.e., invisible beginning, can be a little loose and sloppy), and a list of "Good For"s (i.e., toe up socks, bags, top-down hats and mittens)
- Each CO/BO has a few close-up "finished" photos that show you what it's supposed to look like.
- The CO/BOs are categorized for quick reference; for example, the CO categories and number of COs referenced:
--- All Purpose (8)
--- Ribbing (moderate stretch) (4)
--- Ribbing (a lot of stretch) (8)
--- End-of-Row (5)
--- Super Stretchy (10)
--- Decorative (9)
--- Temporary & Hems (5)
--- Toe-Up Socks (3)
--- Circular (2)
--- (Note, the BOs are far fewer, 22 total)
- The book is designed pretty well & has an index

Cons:
As I said, this book is not, IMO, good for learning any of the CO/BOs referenced in it. Perhaps I am spoiled by YouTube and TECHKnitter's blog (and many other *free* online resources that have set the standard, in my mind, for exceptional explanations of knitting methods), but for every CO/BO I have referenced in this book, I had to look it up on YouTube to understand how its done. Here's why:

- The instructions are very sparsely worded and quite a few times haven't made sense to me
- The photos are RIDICULOUSLY small and waaay too zoomed-out to see what the needles/yarn-strands are doing. This actually pisses me off because there is TONS of space around the photos for more photos or larger photos. Also, these photos clumsily attempt to "line up" with the steps they are associated with; however, there are no notations in the photos to reference back to the step in which they belong. It's also not readily apparent which part of the corresponding step the photo belongs to as some of the steps have many comma-delimited parts.

In summary, I see this publication as a glorified reference book, and not a terribly bad one, but it, for me, is not at all a how-to. On the cover it states the book has 54 "step-by-step" methods, but the step-by-steps feel lacking and lazy, especially compared to the decent work done on organizing its content. Interestingly, the book references specific YouTube videos in its Resources appendix. It would have been nice to have those inline with their corresponding CO/BO, however. If half-stars were permitted, I would give it 2.5 stars.

Perfect little book to take along - wherever you happen to be knitting...
By DeborahDarling
I've been knitting since I was 9 years old...over 50 years. I've knit every style imaginable with every technique. I knit right handed, left handed, English, Continental & Portuguese.
I've got more knitting pattern books than is rational for anyone to have, and more yarn than many knit shops.
So when I buy a knitting book, it has to be really, really useful. And this one is. Really, really useful.
First - the reviewers who say they can't see or use the charts should likely have their cataracts removed. I did and this book is totally useable. Don't know what they're talking about!
Second - You've gotta love a book that fits in your knitting bag. I take it with me to knit gatherings and have used it dozens of times to help someone solve a cast on or bind off dilemma.
3rd - I like the fact that each type is in it's own category, and that there are several choices within each category.
4th - There are other, perhaps more comprehensive tomes on cast on, bind offs...but really...who wants to drag a 5 lb book along with you whenever you go to your knit group, shop, seminar etc.

Perfect book for reference to give your project polish
By sparky30084
I purchased the kindle version of this book so I could reference easily on my iPad. That was a HUGE plus for me as It reduces drastically what I have to carry around with me and it's at my fingertips whenever I want to reference it. I have been knitting since I was a child, over 40 years, and I love having this type of reference book handy because I learned CO and BO techniques my grandmothers and stepmother used but, it's true and sometimes the main parts I am really happy with but the edges just don't look good for the project. If you have a tablet or laptop I HIGHLY recommend purchasing the electronic version. I know some people said the binding in the physical book was not good. I know the kindle app lets you bookmark and write notes. I know I always change some things from the original pattern and like to write that so I remember. As for techniques and pictures I understand if you are a beginner that you might need to look at a video but, for me, the pictures and descriptions are perfect to make me look and know what she is telling me to do. I'm guilty of not being able to think outside what I know a lot of the time and need somthing to make me say, why didn't I think of that?

It's Black and White. Best of the Bunch.
By WildHog
This is a beautifully produced text. The introductory chapters are appropriately light math and heavy on well illustrated concepts. The practical tips will prove invaluable to beginning head and neck ultrasonographers. There is a brief review of the 6 neck levels with succinct color illustrations and normal ultrasonographic appearance. Subsequent chapters on various anatomic levels and common pathology are very well done. Perhaps the most valuable asset of the text is the ultrasound pictures themselves. Printed in gloss with high contrast black and white ( with occasional Color Doppler) like you would see on a good monitor. I have read two other head and neck (and skimmed a 3rd on Amazon) US books; the US images are not comparable.
It's Black and White. Beautiful. Succinct. A Classic.

From Charity to Social Work: Mary E. Richmond and the Creation of an American Profession, by Elizabeth N. Agnew

Mary E. Richmond (1861-1928) was a contemporary of Jane Addams and an influential leader in the American charity organization movement. In this biography - the first in-depth study of Richmond's life and work - Elizabeth N. Agnew examines the contributions of this important, if hitherto under-valued, woman to the field of charity and to its development into professional social work. Orphaned at a young age and largely self-educated, Richmond initially entered charity work as a means of self-support, but came to play a vital role in transforming philanthropy - previously seen as a voluntary expression of individual altruism - into a valid, organized profession. Her career took her from charity organization leadership in Baltimore and Philadelphia to an executive position with the prestigious Russell Sage Foundation in New York City. Richmond's progressive civic philosophy of social work was largely informed by the social gospel movement. She strove to find practical applications of the teachings of Christianity in response to the social problems that accompanied rapid industrialization, urbanization, and poverty. created an appealing, if ambiguous, path for other professional women. A century later her legacy continues to echo in social work and welfare reform.
