a brief diversion

A while back on rec.arts.books, someone asked for any recommendations of authors like P.G. Wodehouse. In the ensuing responses, this thin little volume by Durrell was mentioned. I recognized Durrell's name from my research into travel literature, and thought I'd give his humor a try. These are short stories, told to an unseen chronicler (and fellow diplomat) by an older collegue named Antrobus. The service is foreign, in a generic country name Vulgaria (a cute little dig at snobbish English diplomats). While the language is quite pleasant, and some of the situations quite amusing, what Durrell is missing is that sense of plot known as the conclusion (or, as a character says here, "the pay off"). Durrell tries, but never seems to get it right. I enjoyed it as a brief diversion (the book is less than 90 pages), but doubt I'll be looking for more.

A Refreshing Aperitif

A true negroni cocktail is one part gin, one part red vermouth, and one part Campari. Lately gin has been replaced with vodka. It calls itself a negroni but it is not the real thing, it is a derivative. The same can be said of Lawrence Durrell. He is known as an English writer or a British writer, but he did not feel comfortable with either label. This slender volume of his short comic tales, illustrates this point.
It is more a collection of caricatures written by an outsider and it lacks the subtle sympathy of its subjects that a Waugh or an Amis capture so well even while lampooning their characters. It is amusing but only two dimensional and as said before, it borders on caricature and not true comedy. This is not surprising since Durrell"s reputation stands upon his "Alexandria Quartet."
However these stories are intriguing for those who wish to get a taste of this curious author who while writing such supposedly "English" works has written works such as the forgotten "The Black Book: An Agon" which some consider mere erotica at best. This is the point of view of a man who hung about with the likes of Henry Miller, felt more at home in Corfu than England, always on the periphery of the mores and posturing of the British Empire. Read this because these are well-written and amusing and are sign posts in appreciating English Literature in the first half of the twentieth century.
