The "Hell's Kitchen" of Martial Arts.

Just finished reading this, and can honestly say it's worth the read. Almost every point that the author makes is about observations which I'm certain practitioners in the martial arts community have given thought to, and have even gritted their teeth over.
Not only does this book highlight what is wrong with modern martial art practices, but also calls out traditional stylists as well. No punches are pulled here; this book reminds me of Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen", except that this is the "Hell's Kitchen" of Martial Arts.

Good info, but...

The author has obviously thought well and hard regarding traditional vs modern martial arts (among many other MA related subjects) and has plenty to say about it - this book is no pamphlet (398 pages). That's where the rub is.
Like traditional and modern martial arts, the writer would be better suited to the maxim of "less is more". Not in content, as this is actually pretty good, but in writing style. The author's verbose writing style quickly becomes arduous and unnecessarily lengthy. Don't be surprised if you find your focus drifting and thinking about going to the kitchen to make a sandwich. I find that I can only digest the material in short reading sessions before I feel the effort is not worth the reward.
I'm not far along in the book and maybe the author's style improves later but I'm skeptical. If it does I'll update this review (it may be awhile...).
Good stuff, but delivery could be improved if the author worked harder to express his ideas in a more concise style.

Must read for anyone currently practicing or thinking about taking up martial arts

This book is pretty long and best read in sections to digest it, but it is brutally honest and sometimes humorous. If you are considering taking up any kind of martial arts, this is what you should check out first. Helps you pick out the BS and nonsense that a lot of mini-mall karate/tae kwon do schools preach and push, and how many modern martial arts systems have unfortunately been watered down. The author helps you pick out what vital details many modern instructors either don't know or don't care about, and how it impacts the quality of any. Be careful though, if you read it, you may be kind of nervous because you (or your teacher) may be guilty of these flaws! Take it from a guy who gave up his entire life to better himself in the martial arts and didn't cut corners. Al leaves no stone unturned and touches on every essential aspect for building a quality knowledge of fighting.
