The legend of the holy grail, like much dubious history of its vintage, encompasses a veritable labyrinth of divergent, often directly contradictory stories. It is not one legend but many, from King Arthur to the Knights Templar to the mysterious village of Rennes-le-Chateau and the Merovingian bloodline. This being the case, Griffin's slight but eminently readable essay should be considered an introduction to the subject rather than a definitive analysis of it. He posits several different theories on the identity of the grail and, investigating the origins and significance of various contenders, assesses them with convincing dispassion. He approaches the material as historian, scientist, and detective by turns, and is able to reach crisp, clearheaded conclusions while calling up as many questions as he answers. A reader who finds the Holy Grail intriguing but whose knowledge of it comes primarily from Monty Python and Indiana Jones films will find this an exemplary place to start an exploration of the vast, mysterious world of grail lore. An unscholarly disappointment

I've never studied much about the Holy Grail, though the occult is a long-standing interest of mine. I thought that this book might be a good place to start an exploration. It looked short and sweet, and the editorial review here was favorable. Boy, was I wrong! The facts that Griffin cites don't substantiate his conclusions, and he doesn't even attribute them. The book (or at least the first few chapters of it, I stopped reading midway in disgust) is full of lofty references to the breadth of research required for a study of the Grail. If Griffin did research, I didn't find any evidence of that. (Footnotes, man! Footnotes are your friends!) And also, even though my understanding of the history and legend surrounding the Grail is extremely limited, he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. Very disappointing.

Interesting but non-essential

I confess I'm obsessed with the Grail, the Knights Templar, Mary Magdalene, the Tarot. Blame that doggone DaVinci Code. This quest-no pun intended-led me to Griffin's book.
The good news is it's short and it does have some interesting historical asides (Jesus' blood would have been preserved by Joseph of Armimathea in the Grail because it was the Jewish burial tradition to bury spilt blood with the deceased.) The bad news is the book badly needs an editor. Information is repeated over and over, sometimes within paragraphs of each other. Griffin, while clearly passionate about his subject, is also clearly not a career writer-the cover says he's a network specialist. He's capable but his prose lacks a certain polish and elegance. He also has a slight Christian bias, occasionally not separating historical fact from mythology. For example, Griffin states that Joseph of Armimathea established the first Christian church at Glastonbury and carried with him 2 cruets of Christ's blood. I believe Joseph's founding of Glastonbury and in fact his presence in the British Isles is legend-supported by incidental historical details but nonetheless not fact. However Griffin presents it this way and uses this legend as a jumping off point for a whole line of reasoning. That and few other instances made me question the information and conclusions provided.
This book is a good supplement or jumping off point but should not be considered the alpha and omega of your own quest for the Grail legend. Good luck, fellows knights!

About the Author
Vaseem Khan first saw an elephant lumbering down the middle of the road in 1997 when he arrived in India to work as a consultant. It was the most unusual thing he'd ever encountered and served as the inspiration behind his series of crime novels.
He returned to the UK in 2006 and now works at University College London for the Department of Security and Crime Science where he is astonished daily by the way modern science is being employed to tackle crime.

Lyrical and near poetic, the writing is smooth and the imagery is solid and evocative Review of Audio & Written Title

I’ll be honest, it was the synopsis and the fact this title was set in India that had me curious: even though I’m not a huge mystery reader I was expecting a twist on the more well-known stories by Alexander McCall Smith and his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, rich with the feel, life and people. And Vaseem Khan completely met and exceeded those expectations with this book.

Oh of course, it is a crime fiction story, and there are moments that hit that disturbing mark of ‘how could anyone do that’, but Chopra is so engaging and likable, flamboyant with a great deal of optimism and hope for good things to happen, it is hard not to be influenced by his manner. His wife, complete with a subplot of her own, is also fascinating, and the images, scenes and feel of the setting are so vividly presented you can almost scent the breeze on the air.

I don’t believe that anyone can resist a baby elephant, and there are so many sweet (yes – this story is at its heart, incredibly sweet) scenes as Chopra takes this unexpected life into his keeping, and the two travel on to discover the many correlations between them. Oh the mystery was clever, but presented in a way that just felt like days in the life. Lyrical and near poetic, the writing is smooth and the imagery is solid and evocative. I tend to the lighter side of the mystery genre, it’s often the characters and settings that draw me in and have me returning to an author: I’ll certainly be looking forward to the next from Vaseem Khan.

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 5 Narration 5 Story 5

I was initially intrigued by the synopsis of this title, as mentioned in my initial review of the ARC copy of this title, and I was not disappointed in the least. The option to review this title in audio, with a narrator that could bring the musical lilt and proper pronunciation to the words and names was one too good to pass up.

Chopra is engaging, and the dynamic of he and his inheritance, a baby elephant is wonderful. It’s hard to resist a baby elephant, and the intermixing of animal and the belief system of those in the story brought moments of true joy to this listen. I enjoyed this opportunity to have a listen to a book I was already familiar with, finding new moments and nuanced elements to Chopra, while moments that were horrible in the first were doubly so here.

The writing for this story is lyrical and musical and the narration provided by Sartaj Garewal brought every moment of that musicality, accent, tone, delivery and pacing all transport the listener to Mumbai. There is a particular patois to the names and words of India, soft and hard consonants and vowels work together in a pattern that has a distinct flow and metre, emotional context, stress, tension and sorrow all adjust that rhythm to provide a solid understanding of the emotions that should be present, and perhaps just aren’t, as the mystery and solution unfold.

Murder, mayhem and a conflicted, if not always patient, Inspector Chopra all combine in a wonderful story that transports listeners and readers to another place, one of conflicting and often contrasting ties to modernity and tradition. A wonderful read or listen that will keep you coming back to passages, moments and imaginings.

Don't miss this one

Inspector Chopra really doesn't want to retire. His last day at work brings parting gifts from colleagues, a case that likely will not be followed without him, and a baby elephant. Loved this book. Rich with the feel of Mumbai, it's a story of a good man who believes in ideals like justice, and of a very unusual baby elephant. Can't wait for the author's next book; I'm hoping this is the start of a long series.

there's the unsolved murder of a poor teenaged boy

I simply adored The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra. The novel begins on the last day of work for Police Inspector Ashwin Chopra. He's retiring after nearly 30 years as a policeman in Mumbai. But Inspector Chopra has a hard time coping with retirement. First of all, there's the unsolved murder of a poor teenaged boy. Then there's the uncomfortable situation at home complicated by the baby elephant received from his uncle.

So, like many retired policemen, Chopra can't just walk away. He keeps poking his nose into the investigation, discovering that higher-ups in the police department want the case closed quickly with a ruling of accidental death. But Chopra is convinced that the boy was murdered. And, back at home, the head of the residents' committee wants Chopra to get rid of the baby elephant and remove it from the yard surrounding the apartment building.

The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra is a gentle and charming mystery. The setting in Mumbai is “exotic” to this Texan American who hasn't traveled too much outside the USA and is intrigued with the everyday life of people who live on the other side of the world. But, as different as India is compared to Texas, I could immediately identify with Inspector Chopra and his wife Poppy. Their concerns weren't different at all. Chopra has to deal with the domineering Mrs. Subramanium, chairman of the residents' committee. He's got the aggravation of his interfering mother-in-law living in his home. And the new Inspector is so jealous of Chopra that he won't listen to anything he has to say about the murdered boy.

Mystery readers will find themselves intrigued by the gentle yet persistent Chopra. Baby Ganesh, as the elephant is named, contributes his own charm to the story. All-in-all, a delightful read. I note that Vaseem Khan has another Inspector Chopra book due out in May of 2016—which I hope heralds a long series to come.

When I read the first edition of this book all I could think was, "Why hasn't anyone wrote this simple of a how to in my industry?" Then Jeff reissued the book for anyone that sells high end B2C. Good coaches provide some "scripting" and without taking away individual style, Jeff Shore outlines some great techniques that are proven successful. I enjoyed the stories and his insight from YEARS in the business - managing and selling. It is apparent that Jeff spent a considerable amount of time learning how to be great when he was on the floor and this book is enabling others to benefit from his insight.

An excellent source for parents and early childhood educators

As a future educator I believe this book is an excellent source for anyone who has or teaches children. The terminology is easy to follow and the whole layout of the book is great. It not only gives you wonderful ideas on using music with your child but it shows you. I believe the revised edition should include prenatal music nurturing as a chapter and not just an appendix in the back along with a CD of some of the recordings. This is definitely a book I will use over and over again. I recommend this book 100%.

An excellent book full of wonderful information

I am currently using this book in an Early Childhood Music class in Clermont, FL. This book is full of countless ideas for using music with young children. It is written in terminology that is easy to read and understand. I also believe that prenatal chapter needs to be included since music starts before birth, and a CD with examples of the music for the labs would be very helpful for those that are not taking the class. I have recommended this book to parents with young children.

Judith von Halle, born in Berlin in 1972, attended school in Germany and the USA and subsequently studied architecture. She first encountered anthroposophy in 1997, and began working as a member of staff at Rudolf Steiner House in Berlin, where she also lectured. In addition she had her own architectural practice. In 2004 she received the stigmata, which transformed her life. Her first book was published in German in 2005, and she now works principally as a lecturer and author. She and her husband live in Berlin.

Finally-clear simple directions for successful modeling chocolate

As a home hobby baker it is simply too expensive for me to purchase commercial tubs of modeling chocolate. I've tried numerous recipes and had poor results. Using this book I successfully made my own Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate, and White Chocolate modeling chocolate clay. I keep it double wrapped in a container and take it out as needed to make roses, leaves, and cut outs for cookies, cakes, and petit fours. The properly made White modeling chocolate colors beautifully. This was the answer to better decorating. Most importantly you can do so many of the same things you do with fondant, except this tastes and smells perfectly delicious. Great book. I posted photos of my first roses & fantasy flowers here.

Ultimate guide for working with modeling chocolate

Coniaris' book is excellent. In addition to the vivid photos that clearly guide readers through each technique and tutorial, her writing style is descriptive and as vivid as the photos. Each "how-to" really comes to life through the combination of words and photos. The detailed step-by-step instructions would make it easy for even a novice to re-create all the decorations.

I'm not a pastry chef, but have worked in many high-end bakeries for years and can attest that modeling chocolate is FAR superior to fondant. I can't imagine why any bakery or baker that aims to offer high-quality products would even touch the stuff (fondant). This book really is the ultimate guide to making the switch to modeling chocolate and mastering its use! Once you try it, you'll never go back to fondant.

This is not the place for a philosophical analysis of Berkeley's original text, and its content of argument. The review concerns the specific book edited by Dancy, and its worth in respect of its further contribution to understanding the Treatise.
This book is to be strongly recommended as it provides a multitude of resources that contextualise, criticise, and clarify, the positions put forward by Berkeley in this work.
The most substantial contribution is the extensive introduction comprised of 15 punchy sections, covering Berkeley's life, his academic heritage, and analysis of his thought (both internal and external to that given in the Treatise). Dancy is fair to Berkeley in setting forth the most robust defences of his position, and marshalling critical arguments against the Berkelian stance. This is supplemented by an extremely thorough set of endnotes that are continually present in the background of the text, offering detailed guidance whenever necessary, or desired.
Additionally, the book offers a summarised concise overview of the arguments provided in the Treatise, a glossary of archaic terms(!), and a very helpful short section entitled "How to use this book" (why don't more books include this sort of thing?). There is also a manageable annotated bibliography of further reading to trail a path for academic expansion.
Overall, I found that this book provided a systematic treatment of the text and provided a solid structure of support surrounding the subject. Also included, the letters between Berkeley and Johnson, provide an unexpected bonus. This book is relatively cheap, considering its breadth and depth. In my opinion, it is an ideal text through which to study (and enjoy) Berkeley's Treatise.

A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge (Commonly called "Treatise" when referring to Berkeley's works) is a 1710 work by the Irish Empiricist philosopher George Berkeley. This book largely seeks to refute the claims made by his contemporary John Locke about the nature of human perception. Whilst, like all the Empiricist philosophers, both Locke and Berkeley agreed that there was an outside world, and it was this world which caused the ideas one has within one's mind; Berkeley sought to prove that outside world was also composed solely of ideas. Berkeley did this by suggesting that "Ideas can only resemble Ideas" - the mental ideas that we possessed could only resemble other ideas (not physical objects) and thus the external world consisted not of physical form, but rather ideas. This world was given logic and regularity by some other force, which Berkeley did his best to conclude was a God.

Long refuted by most philosophers, Berkeley's claims are often felt to have been a form of rationalisation - Berkeley later became Bishop of Cloyne, and was a highly religious man. Treastise's suggestion that the world was made of ideas with an omnipitent force guiding was his alternative to the Lockean Empiricism popular at the time, which Berkeley felt led to skepticism. In spite of this Berkeley was a capable, respected and entertaining thinker. Some doubt exists as to whether he truly believed his conclusion that the world at large was composed of ideas; with modern thinking tending towards him indeed having thought this to be the case.

an interesting reading

This is a very important work of George Berkeley. On of its most interesting topics is that about the existence of matter. As, for human beings, the "existence" of something is related to its perception, there is a very close link between "things" and ideas. Both cannot have their existence completely proved. The arguments place the book among the most interesting on the top issues discussed in its time (empiricism, materialism, etc.)
