About the Author

Vincenzo Amendola has been an assistant professor of physical chemistry in the Department of Chemical Sciences of Padua University since 2008. He received his Ph.D. in material science and engineering in 2007 and his master’s degree in material science in 2004, both from Padua University, working in the group of Professor M. Meneghetti. In 2007, he was a 6 month visiting PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as part of the group of Professor F. Stellacci, and in 2011 he was a 7 month academic visitor at Cambridge University, as part of the group of Dr. A.C. Ferrari. He was honored with the Levi prize and the Semerano prize from the Italian Chemical Society. He is the author of several peer-reviewed papers, one patent, and has given invited talks at several conferences, including the first conference about Laser Irradiation and Nanoparticles Generation in Liquids (ANGEL2010). He also serves as referee for several journals about nanotechnology, plasmonics and physical chemistry. His main research topics are the laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) of functional and functionalizable nanostructures, the study of plasmonic properties of nanoparticles, and, in general, the interaction of nanosecond laser pulses with matter for the generation of new materials and of new phenomena (like self-healing processes). He is currently collaborating with various research groups in Europe and Asia. More information about his research activities can be found on the web at www.chimica.unipd.it/vincenzo.amendola.

Moreno Meneghetti is a full professor of physical chemistry at the University of Padova. He focuses his research interests on the optical properties of materials as tools for understanding their behavior. He uses both experimental and theoretical approaches for characterizing phase transitions in conducting and superconducting organic materials, focusing especially on electron-phonon couplings involving molecular units. He developed full-diagonalization and non-mean field approaches to study the optical properties (vibrational and electronic) of low-dimensional solids. Dr. Meneghetti’s research interests also include nonlinear optical properties of molecular systems and particularly the dynamics of nonlinear transmission of excited states with applications like optical limiting. Nonlinear optical properties and Raman properties of nanostructures based on carbon-like fullerenes and nanotubes were also investigated for their reactivity and for the preparation of new materials. Models for the electronic properties of single-wall nanotubes based on non-conventional methodologies are also the focus of his current research. Laser ablation of metals in solution for the production of metal nanoparticles is another aim of his research, focusing especially on the SERS effect. In particular, gold nanoparticles are used as nanobioconjugates with applications in nanomedicine for targeting and imaging at the sub-cell level. Dr. Meneghetti’s research activity has been published in more than 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Best Lennon I've read! SIX STARS!!

Wiener describes wonderfully, and with great interest to the reader, how Lennon inter-related with people close to him as well as events around him. It is an excellent commentary on the sixties as well as much of the seventies. Being exactly ten years younger than Lennon, I considered myself the prime age (13) when the Fab Four made it big. The "Summer of Love" fell between my junior and senior years in high school. I felt part of the times. Wiener, however, only demonstrated to me how much I missed, and how little I understood! COME TOGETHER is highly recommended not only for my generation, and my parents' (who thought they knew it all), but especially the younger generations who love the music, and want more.

a wonderfully written account on the pros and cons of lennon

It is true that Lennon had much to learn about politics.It is also true that he had even more to learn about life.He even had much to learn about music (he would have been the first to agree with the last point),but he had something that only a select few people from his "genre" had,and that was desire to be heard.Naturally,when he was heard he had much to say.When he got the opportunity to say it,he had much tendency to speak it with words that made only sense to the ones who lived in his world (or at least wanted to).There were a few messages he made,however,that did not only affect millions of lives,but may have even changed it for the better.This was a power he began to realize during the height of his success with the Beatles,and it scared the hell out of him.Probably beyond what any of us could possibly concieve,it ripped him to shreads.Yoko helped much in the way of opening him up,but in using him as a puppet (as many did),she really only made matters worse.It was not until just before his death that he really began to realize that what he wanted in life was peace and good music.Not the peace of the world,but peace of mind for himself.The book Come together captures this emotional roller coaster ride better than any book written on the subject.Next to Barry Miles' "Paul Mccartney:many years from now" it is without question the most honest and well written account on one of the greatest pop culture stories ever told.And it is written with wit and wisdom,as well as sympathy for a man that was terribly misunderstood,even by his own self.Something to be read numerous times,especially the account on the "more popular than Christ" contreversey.Lennon is a true icon for this century,but he was also very human (more than most),and this book portrays this fact very well.

KNOW THE UNKNOWN LENNON !

Jon Weiner's book is a goldmine for all those interested in Lennon's political phase which he actively was involved in after his departure from England to the States. His underground friends and allies like Jerry Rubin, David Peel, Michael X and a host of others star in this novel which takes us down the streets of New York with a political Lennon voicing his concerns and opinions on a host of issues not related to his world of music. Though the style is not very evolved, Weiner's book is indispensible for any serious study of John Lennon's political inclinations.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the nervous system.....

You don't have to be a medical student to enjoy this book; anyone with any interest in learning about the brain will benefit from the book's novel and engaging approach. From the opening chapter, which discusses the extraordinary case of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the author of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", the author helps the reader recognize that we are surrounded by neurobiology. Ever wonder why we sigh? Or why humans were not born with the ability to walk? These and many other questions are answered throughout the text, which make it eminently readable. The author's passion for the subject is evident on every page. Although targeted for medical students, I recommend the book for anyone who wants a comprehensive framework for how the nervous system works; you'll actually have fun reading it!

New approach to teach neuroanatomy for medical students

With a lot of enthusiasm I read the new Medical Neurobiology book and I really liked it. The book is clear, inquisitive and attractive by the way that presents the subjects. The shaded color boxes bring relevant clinical conditions, syndromes, common phenomenon that either we face them every day, or the doctors will meet them in the future. Phenomenon's that we really do not pay attention to mechanisms underline them. The Boxes enriches the text a lot. The sketches are clear and simple. The author took a new and different approach to teach first year medical student Neuroanatomy. Instead of describing pathways and regions in the nervous system the book uses a different approach by asking question and proposed explanations for neurological phenomenon. The new unique approach justifies the chosen title, Medical Neurobiology, which catalogued this book on a different niche from the traditional Neuroanatomy books. A beautiful and poetic read in neurobiology

There are a lot of big and heavy books about neuroscience and neuroanatomy. There are books with enough details to put to sleep a two year old toddler who drank a double espresso. This book is not one of those (I have "Principles of Neural Science, Fifth Edition" and looked and read many others, I can use those books only as references because that what they seem to be: a big big collection of facts and stories). This book gives us a very good perspective of all of this fits together and how it fits together with who we are as human beings and animals with a brain and neural system. To me this is invaluable and it is the only way to make sense out of the incredible complexity of the brain and the behaviors is creates. It is also the only text book I know which is also poetical, human and artistic in a beautiful way. It is really a worthwhile read to make, no matter what your walk in life is.
P.S. All the stories about missing pages and abominable spelling might be part of older versions, but I have found none in the one I am reading.

A pleasant & interesting read

I found "How to meet the Queen" a very interesting and entertaining read. It provides some basic tools in critical questioning that would be of value to everyone, but especially for those that have the ambition to take on hard goals.

Mr. Lee mixes a good variety of personal antidotes that keep the book light and entertaining while he's making his points.

After reading the chapter on Observation, I noticed myself noticing people and their behaviour more, picking out the odd little details that were suggestive of their hidden stories.

I read How To Meet The Queen to learn how to ask the right questions and came away with a system for doing so which has proved invaluable in getting to the heart of the matter in many situations. What I found most compelling was the peppering of anecdotes throughout the book from the author's personal and business experience that demonstrates how effective and universally applicable the system is. I can't imagine what would be more important when facing any challenge than understanding what you are facing and more often than not you can only do that by asking the right questions. In short, I found the book to be a very interesting and entertaining read and came away with an important tool for life and business.

Robert Smith Surtees devoted his life basically to two things: fox hunting and novel writing, actually combining both into a single pursuit. He wrote a number of delightful novels centering around the fox-hunting society in and about Durham, England; this was his last book, published posthumously, and among his best. Facey Romford is a confidence trickster who passes himself off as his wealthy namesake, using the other's stationery to pull off the switch. He becomes Master of the Hounds of the Heavyside Hunt, and from that vantage point we are privy to all kinds of characters and happenings. The novel ends with Facey and his new bride going to Australia, not in disgrace, as was hoped by all who knew him, but where his fortunes only increase and all is well. Surtees's humor is broad and ruthless, and his observations on what makes this society tick are keen and perceptive. The novel presents an entertaining look at the sporting side of Victorian England.

Reed is Professor in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and a core-faculty member of its Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), one of the world's leading university research groups on advanced wireless communications. Until recently he served as MPRG's director. His most recent book is Software Radio: A Modern Approach to Radio Design (Prentice-Hall, 2002, 0130811580). Professor Reed is a Fellow of the IEEE.

This book's additional contributors include government researchers and faculty and students at Virginia Tech's Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

To a great extent, this book was inspired by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency project called NETEX. The program manager, Stephen Griggs, recognized that far too little information about Ultra Wideband (UWB), particularly pulse-based UWB systems, appeared in the literature. Moreover, he believed that the UWB information available in the public domain is sometimes incorrect and misleading, particularly regarding interference issues with UWB. Thus, the program participants were encouraged to widely disseminate the results of the NETEX program to help clarify many of these outstanding issues. Much of the information presented in this book is a direct result of this program and other UWB research programs from Virginia Tech and the Army Research Lab.

UWB activity has picked up immensely since the Federal Communication Commission's 2002 decision to allow for the transmission of UWB and the subsequent standardization efforts with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Some see UWB as an enabling technology for new wireless applications that span from high-data-rate transmission of raw multimedia video to new location-aware, low-data-rate, and low-power communication of sensor data. Non-communication applications, such as through-the-wall imaging and ground-penetrating radar, also capture the imagination of researchers and entrepreneurs.

The controversy surrounding the standardization efforts illustrates the many debatable issues of UWB. From an academic perspective, many fundamental research issues remain unresolved, including the best modulation types for particular applications, efficient broadband antennas with a desirable form factor, propagation characteristics of UWB in various environments, the impact of UWB physical layer attributes on the networking layers, and the list continues. UWB will certainly be the subject of many theses and dissertations to come.

This book provides a broad technical view of UWB. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with simulation of propagation issues, modeling, and channel simulation, and much of this information is presented in the public domain for the first time. Chapter 4 focuses on antennas and outlines some surprising differences in antenna performance with respect to narrowband systems. Chapter 5 examines transmitter design issues and covers some of the basic modulation principles of UWB. Chapter 6 presents an overview of receiver design issues and explains how impulse UWB systems are particularly different from conventional carrier-based systems. Chapter 7 addresses the controversial interference issues of UWB; unlike traditional communications, UWB may intentionally transmit co-channel with other communication signals. Chapter 8 examines how to simulate UWB systems; such simulation requires more finesse because broadband signals encounter excessive simulation time if structured incorrectly. Chapter 9 describes how the physical layer capabilities of UWB impact the performance and design of upper layers. Finally, applications and case studies of existing UWB systems are addressed in Chapter 10.
