Best Available Primer on Basic Financial Statements

This is the best primer on the basics of financial statements imaginable. It explains them in a clear and logical way for the benefit of anyone who is not an accountant. Better yet, it shows how they connect with each other and tie together. Over the years I have bought dozens and dozens of copies of its editions for in-house training of non-financial managers in my companies.

Great for accounting newbies

I'm a FR newbie and the textbook for my MBA class was just confusing me. I was so lost and felt like I couldn't catch up because the textbook was in a foreign language. Then I got this book... This book has visuals that helped me connect the dots between IS, CF, and BR in a way that was logical and made sense in my mind! And the language was simple and really helped make sense of what I couldn't in the textbook. As a brand marketer who was a history/English undergrad, this helped me in my financial reporting MBA class more than I can say!!

Revelation for the beginner. Revision for the intermediate.

It's a good read. However, I was already acquainted with most of the knowledge being taught.from accounting courses at universities. The most important lessons I learned are: the interconnections between the financial statements,what negative cash-flow means, how companies can massage their numbers and the meaning of a CPA's opinion. Not bad.

In 1975, translator Jacobson first acquainted us with Nikitenko in Diary of a Russian Censor which she edited. Now, again in his own words, we have this account of Nikitenko's childhood and adolescence, which he began writing in 1851. His constant preoccupation, other than survival, was to be free of the serf conditions into which he was born. He shows very well the gratuitous capriciousness of the serf-owning gentry, which placed him "at the mercy of whim and chance." In a unique career, he learned how to read and write, became a teacher, and made some powerful friends, who in 1824 sought to free him from his owner the richest man in Russia, who regarded his appeal as "not worthy of attention." An intriguing account, with a most useful introduction by Peter Kolchin, contrasting contemporary Russian serfdom and black slavery in the United States. For academic and specialized libraries. A fascinating look at life in early 19th century Russia

What a fun book! The author tells of his life as a serf in the Imperial Russia of the early 19th Century. Admittedly, his was not the life of a typical serf--he was well educated, eventually being emancipated by his "owner" (and the description of this process is in itself fascinating). The great part of this book is in the details--the descriptions of the people, places, and interactions of his childhood; the reader cannot help sympathizing with his poor father who tries over and over again to make the best of his situation, yet is trapped by his social standing. This work is a great addition to the current understanding of life in Russia during the period.

I didn't read the whole thing but most of it. Short and easy read novel. Most people don't know that slavery (serfdom) ended in Russia just two years before the Emancipation Proclamation in America in 1863.

Thank god almighty we are free at last! - Path to freedom for former serf

Autobiography by a former serf turned gentry. He describes his childhood looking back from the present and thus has provided a somewhat rose tinted view of his past. However, the constant torture of his lowly status of serf continues to plague him throughout the book, increasingly so as he becomes more educated. We as readers see the corruption that plagues past Russia much in a similar matter that continues to plague countries today. The role of personal connections triumphs the law and justice. These personal connections are used by the nobility to win seats of power where they can gain enormous sums via bribery. Yet these very same personal connections are used by Nikitenko to win his freedom.

About the Author

Dr. Prabhata K. Swamee is a distinguished Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at ITM University, Gurgaon, India. Dr. Swamee completed his B.E. (Civil Engineering) in 1962 and M.E. (Hydraulic Engineering) in 1966 from University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee), India. He completed his PhD in civil engineering from the same institute in 1974. Dr. Swamee has co-authored 2 books and has to his credit 111 papers published in international journals. Dr. Swamee is Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Bhagu R. Chahar is Professor of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. He was a Visiting Professor at the Ecole des mines de Saint-Etienne, France and Asian Institute of Technology Bangkok. Dr. Chahar received his PhD in Civil Engineering from IIT Roorkee and MTech in Civil Engineering with specialisation Water Resources Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He has 22 years of teaching, research and industry experience in water resources engineering and has published more than 100 articles in reputed journals and proceedings. Dr. Chahar is recipient of several scholarships and awards including Visiting International Fellowship of EWRI of ASCE, Young Scientist of DST and AICTE Career Award for Young Teachers. He is Fellow of ISH, IWWA, IE(I) and IWRS and Life Member of ISTE, IAH and ASCE.

About the Author
Steven Heller is the co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program and co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism program at SVA, New York. For 33 years he was an art director at the New York Times. He is editor of AIGA VOICE and contributing editor to Print, Eye, Baseline and I.D. magazines. He is the author of more than 120 books on design and popular culture. He is the recipient of the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement. V�ronique Vienne has worked at a number of US magazines as art director, and is the author of The Art of Doing Nothing and The Art of Imperfection. A frequent contributor to Graphis and Metropolis magazines, she lives in Paris.

Fascinating, beautiful book

I bought this book for my daughter who will be studying graphic design in the fall. It is a wonderful book filled with examples of the author's top 100. From small concepts, such as font usage, to the large architectural realm, it is covered well within this book.

Each of these topics can be covered further through some simple research, in case you want more in-depth understanding. This book simply gives a brief overview of each of each subject area and a few examples. Makes for a great conversation starter as you can flip through the pages and be inspired or forced to look at a subject differently.

Overall - a great primer into the world of Graphic Design.

A thorough and well documented journey through some of the principal elements of Graphic Design's tool kit and their evolution, sometimes even centuries back.

I would have preferred more insight into how and why these evolutions occurred as well as additional context into the decision making/creative process graphic designers undergo, but this book is certainly approachable and valuable for laymen approaching graphic design.

I can't say this is the summation of Graphic Design, but it is a consummation of sorts.
This is a visually stunning presentation of design elements that have brought the art from early writing to the dazzling art form is is today.
Some people may quibble over the impact of certain cited advances or failure to include other inventions, practices and processes. However, the volume is stunning in its depictions, glorious in its explanations and a wonder to instill wonder in readers.
Wow.

Great Manual Backed With Scripture

This book was brief, well outlined and proceeded logically from point to point, instructing the junior pastor in what would be needed for him to bring himself to maturity, one step at a time. It is readable in a couple of hours and may be used as an overview when digging into one's own expanded notes is impractical. While this book will not disappoint the deacon or lay pastor required only to preach or pray publicly from time to time, it may not carry all of the depth required in the way of axioms leading to fully mature exposition. Basic rules for interpretation are listed. Detailed suggestions that even include appropriate gesticulation are also written. Ultimately though like so many new skills, one can only learn so much by reading a text. The mature expositor can only become proficient by going to the newrest street corner, Bible study or prayer meeting with his prepared text and practice the "art of prophesying.' May God bless the efforts of all who read this book, even if they are reading it like me in order to assure that I may properly shepherd my family each morning.

In this entry William Perkins provides a brief overview regarding Scripture and its importance (even necessity) for righteous and holy living. As noted in its Preface, the material is not merely for preachers but also for all people. One of the things I found particularly helpful in chapter three was a one- or two-sentence summary of every book in the bible. That alone is worth the price of the e-book! But there is more; that particular section caught my attention, and I am not a preacher but a layman. I am sure there are many textbooks available on the subject but this book provides enough for most people occupying the pews.

Tom’s brother Luke is dead. This has upset a lot of people but it hasn’t upset Tom. Or, rather, it has upset him, but in ways he can’t explain and other people can't understand. You see, Tom and Luke were never friends. In fact, Tom didn't really like Luke at all.

So it’s an odd decision - to try and bury Luke in the pavement of the Tunstall Estate where he was killed. But to Tom, it sort of makes sense, in a stupid-weird kind of way. As he sleeps out on the pavement, he comes across planning officials, tramps, undertakers, police officers, sisters, mothers, estate agents, ghosts, pavement elephants, sky dragons and a strange lad called Tight who wants to sell him a Travelcard.

Written specifically for young people, Burying Your Brother in the Pavement was part of the 2008 National Theatre Connections Festival and was premiered by youth theatres across the UK.
