About the Author
Teresa Morris is the chair of the social work department and director of social work programs at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). She received her M.S.W. from the University of Hawaii and her Doctorate from UC, Berkeley. She is from England via Australia and now lives in California. In England she worked as a secondary school teacher and a youth and community worker. In Australia she was a community worker, and later an academic. In 1989 she went to California to help start a new social work department and now heads that department. Her publications have been in the areas of refugee resettlement, philosophy of science, and alternative paradigm research methods. She teaches research methods.

During the 1920s and 30s, power was often ignored or vilified by international relations scholars--especially in America. Power and International Relations explores how this changed in later decades by tracing how power emerged as an important social science concept in American scholarship after World War I. Combining intellectual history and conceptual analysis, David Baldwin examines power's increased presence in the study of international relations and looks at how the three dominant approaches of realism, neoliberalism, and constructivism treat power.

The clarity and precision of thinking about power increased greatly during the last half of the twentieth century, due to efforts by political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, economists, philosophers, mathematicians, and geographers who contributed to "social power literature." Baldwin brings the insights of this literature to bear on the three principal theoretical traditions in international relations theory. He discusses controversial issues in power analysis, and shows the relevance of older works frequently underappreciated today.

Focusing on the social power perspective in international relations, this book sheds light on how power has been considered during the last half century and how it should be approached in future research.

Arkady and Boris Strugatsky are the most famous and popular Russian writers of science fiction, and the authors of over 25 novels and novellas. Russian tour de force on aftermath of alien visitation

This is a story about the aftermath of an alien visitation - it's an alternate history/sci-fi backdrop to human drama which are the best type of SciFi stories.

Aliens have visited and left behind a large variety of "garbage" that has a variety of helpful and dangerous effects. Good effects are unending batteries. Bad effects are radiation, intense gravity fields, and human flesh dissolving slime.

There are multiple visit sites across the globe that have produced devastating keep out zones. "Stalkers" sneak into these zones and hunt for treasure - they are in turn hunted by strange inhabitants of the Zones and by government enforcers.

The actual story covers a group of scientists, Stalkers, and their families as they like very in the shadow of the Zones and have to cope with the after effects of the alien visit.

There's even a movie based on this called Stalkers but you can't find it on DVD only VHS or on YouTube in Russian with English subtitles.

I think this is a great premise and an excellent characyer study.

I've read this in Russian as well as English. The novel is short, but carries all the plot and character development of one twice its length. The Strugatsky brothers accomplished a work here that is truly more than the sum of its parts, and a timeless sci-fi classic. True to the Eastern European style, as well, it's a story of human struggle against a sci-fi backdrop, not the other way around. And it largely dispenses with the all-too-common dystopian future, rather focusing on a world eerily similar to our own, freeing the reader's imagination to focus on what really matters--the people, and especially the protagonist. Every science fiction fan should have this book on the shelf.

Thoughtful horror

Painful, horrifying, thought-provoking, "Roadside Picnic" uses the analogy of ants trying to make sense of the trash left behind by human picnickers--but the picnickers are are aliens and the ants are human. This is clear from the start, not a spoiler. The protagonist's voice is distinct, rough but humane, and the further we read, the more his compassionate nature shows forth. In a sense the story could be a metaphor for the human condition as understood by some philosophers--we are born into an indifferent universe, we spend our lives trying to catch some pleasure, minimize pain and make sense of the inevitable, bewildering experiences that come our way unasked-for. Well, that's not exactly my own philosophy, but it is very well presented here. I started off thinking of the protagonist as a crude lout, and ended up seeing him as a tragic hero.

I enjoy Korean food as well but as I said

I wanted a complete Japanese cookbook. However, there were too many recipes for Korean food. I enjoy Korean food as well but as I said, I just wanted recipes for Japanese cooking. In addition, of the Japanese recipes, there were too many recipes that were deep fried and I know that that is not the typical Japanese way of cooking.

This book is a publisher's "second" or worse. The one recipe I wanted was smeared with printer's ink and it should never have been sold in the first place. Whomever sold it to me knew or should have known that. However, there is a lot of other readable information so it wasn't a complete waste of money.
