This book provides valuable insight and direction!

Redesign Your Life is a resource book that I will use for the rest of my life. What’s great about this book is that you can use it for many different aspects of your life. It can be used for one or all of its purposes. It provides insight and easy to follow steps for identifying your tendencies of the past, present, and future, defined as a life purpose, life stages, and yearly energies. The book also provides steps for making changes in your life. Redesign Your Life helps the reader set goals and direction based on the reader’s life energies.
I really liked this book and found it helpful because it provided a foundation and derivative of the energies that are in my life. Numerology is very insightful, because it helps me define how and why I am existing. It pin points my positive and negative energies. Knowing my positive and negative energies gives me the power to control the use and influence of these energies. Numerology is so useful, because it gives insight not only into my life, but into the life of close family and friends. When I was reading Redesign Your Life, I found myself making calculations for my parent, siblings, and close friends. Knowing people’s energies helped me understand how and why my friends and family behave the way they do. I could identify when they were acting with their positive or negative energies. This helps me know how to react to their certain behaviors based on their energies as well as my energies.
Redesign Your Life also provided me with step wise tools to defining and attaining goals of mine. Felicia Bender does an excellent job of outlining attainable steps to achieving small and big goals in life. For instance, I have already adjusted a paradigm of culture and my spirituality by looking at my goals for feminist and spiritual aspects of my life. By understanding my predisposition of energies through numerology and knowing how to embrace these energies has given me direction to expand my interests in feminism and spirituality. Redesign Your Life is also helping me make a transition into getting through college and going to medical school.
I would recommend Redesign Your Life to anyone who wants a further understanding of their and close releatives’ lives and would like a big picture scope of making changes in their lives.

Great advice to anyone who wants to communicate clearly

As someone who has spent much of his life speaking publicly (as a teacher for 30 years and, for six years, a pastor), I have always been fascinated by different styles and why some speakers are effective and others are not. Therefore, I was glad to receive a copy of Cam Barber's "What's Your Message? Public Speaking With Twice the Impact, Using Half the Effort" for review purposes.

In this book, Cam Barber demystifies public speaking, busting the myths surrounding public speaking (such as that an effective public speaker has to use a certain number of gestures per minute or that memorizing one's speech beforehand is necessary to effective communication), and demonstrates how, with the proper preparation, a person can overcome fear of public speaking and become an effective communicator.

The first third or so of the book presents a number of case studies of effective communicators (such as Steve Jobs, Nelson Mandela, and Jules Lund) and discusses what makes (or made) them such great speakers. This is followed by what Barber calls "The Vivid Method of Public Speaking," which includes the following parts: (1) The Clarity First Principles, (2) Create a Speech Outline (which includes the following subparts: Creating your message, the magic of chunking, structuring your ideas, structure helps you deliver a speech more powerfully, how to rehearse in half the time), (3) Give Great Expectations.

"What's Your Message?" concludes with advice on how to start a speech, how to end one, optional techniques to engage your listeners, and visual explanations (leveraging slides and visual support).

This book is well-written and its advice is easy to understand and follow. Since much of what Cam Barber says coincides with what I have concluded over the years through trial and error, I can say with some confidence that if you put his principles into practice you will find that public speaking is not as formidable as many make it out to be, and you will become a more effective communicator.

Cam Barber knows how to walk the talk. A professional public speaker and speaking coach, he has written a very engaging and useful book titled, What’s Your Message? It promises that it can allow readers to make twice the impact using half the effort. On this count it delivers thanks to its practical and logical approach that can be adapted for different audiences and situations.

In this book Barber dispels a number of myths about public speaking. Barber traces the original instructions about public speaking back to actors where there was an emphasis on rules regarding body language and performance. Barber claims that this often confused people and made them even more anxious. He also says that a natural delivery can make a speaker seem more relaxed and credible. This guide uses rich, real-life case studies about people like Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Anita Roddick and more in order to prove that good public speakers are not necessarily born but they can be made with good practice and instruction.

In addition to the examples, anecdotes and case studies, Barber also describes “The Vivid Method.” It’s one he has devised himself with respect to offering guidelines and ways to prepare for public speaking. There are handy hints, tips and suggestions as well as some easy-to-follow examples and templates that can be used every day. The key point Barber makes is that the message needs to be clear, consistent and concise.

This is a great book. The first section I read was the Skate Park story on controlling Public Speaking Anxiety. This chapter alone was worth the price of the book. It beautifully explains how you can create a separation between the physical symptoms of stage fright and the ability to think clearly. It has many other sections of similar value.

Great Book

I have been tying for 30 years for myself learning odds and ends along the way. Since the advent of the internet there are videos and patterns at your fingertips but this book has the most "why didn't I think of that" out of any fly tying reference I own. I believe if you are at any stage of tying you will gain some great shortcuts and tidbits for practical tying applications. I even purchased one for my dad for fathers day.

Great tips for beginners and others

I highly recommend this book to anyone who ties flies. Great tips on tools, materials, and techniques. While I had discovered many of these tips on my own, there were so many new ones that I had to make notes and post them at my bench. Also, you'll save enough on materials adapted from everyday products or cheap craft shop items to more than pay for the cost of the book. Well organized too.

Two events rise over Grand Central Winter like sentinels: Stringer's discovery of crack cocaine and his catching the writing bug. Curled deep in his burrow in a Grand Central Station crawlspace, Lee Stringer--ragged, homeless, addicted to crack--is digging around for something he can use to clean his crack pipe. Finally his fingers latch around "some sort of smooth straight stick": a pencil. In the days that follow, he carries it with him wherever he goes. "So I have this pencil with me all the time and then one day I'm sitting there in my hole with nothing to smoke and nothing to do and I pull the pencil out just to look at the film of residue stuck to the sides--you do that sort of thing when you don't have any shit--and it dawns on me that it's a pencil. I mean it's got a lead in it and all, and you can write with the thing." And so that's what he does. "Pretty soon I forget all about hustling and getting a hit. I'm scribbling like a maniac; heart pumping, adrenaline rushing, hands trembling. I'm so excited I almost crap on myself. It's just like taking a hit."

Grand Central Winter is the tale of Stringer's twin addictions--writing and crack--and the lengths he went to in order to satisfy each. But Stringer dwells on neither his descent into hell nor the long journey back. Instead, he paints a nuanced portrait of street life itself, its pleasures as well as its terrors. Hustlers, hookers, dealers, and addicts come to life in a series of vignettes that are tough, unsentimental, but compassionate to the core. There's honest rage to be found in Grand Central Winter, but precious little political posturing. Amazing Writing

Lee Stringer's writing so impressed me that I began sharing it with students in my writing courses to illustrate a variety of points--the power of emotion in honest writing, the plight of the homeless in a rich country, the power of writing to pull a soul from the mire. If my introduction doesn't tempt you to read this book, Kurt Vonnegut's will.
In this short book, Stringer tells his street stories which have the power to make a grown man swear and choke back tears at the same time; I've witnessed this myself more than once. This book is written with a mix of grit and fragmented paragraphs to produce an amazingly unique style that illustrates the dark and haunted caverns in the writer's mind. Stringer found his way off of drugs and mean streets by writing about his experiences and sharing them in the homeless publication Street News which he later went on to edit. His stories are raw and loud.
This country cares too little for its disenfranchised, and too easily looks away from the homeless and downtrodden (Stringer says,"They see only a phenomenon to which they have already adjusted"). Stringer's words will thread readers' hearts with the compassion they require to truly live an examined life in the USA. And besides, the guy is so quotable: "It's the guilt, fear, and stones in your own heart that take you down;" or "Heroism, as I see it, requires a deliberate decision to assume avoidable risks specifically--not incidentally--for the sake of another." Stringer's is an important voice. Do not miss this book.

Stringer helps us see beyond "the homeless"

To come away from this book with a new compassion for "the homeless" is to completely miss the point. Stringer's contribution is so valuable precisely because it shows us that there is no such thing as "the homeless" as if it were some pathetic, faceless, homogeneous mob. Rather, his storytelling challenges us to see each person on the street as an individual with his or her own character, needs, desires, and flaws. Some are deserving of compassion, but others are not. By showing us this, Stringer avoids being patronizing and gives homeless people the dignity that comes with personhood. Indeed, it is interesting that the characters he tells us about are not necessarily unhappy with their lives and looking for some way to get out. Stringer himself speaks of embracing the street life because of the liberation it offered and leaves when he chooses to because he is finally sick of it.

It's literary memoir, not social commentary

Several reviewers criticize Stringer's Grand Central Winter for what they see as its lack of information about life on the streets as well as an absence of narrative cohesion. While I sympathize with both of these complaints, I also think they're misguided.

In the first place, Stringer doesn't claim to be writing social commentary or advocating social reforms. His book is a memoir, pure and simple. His stories are from the street, as the book's subtitle announces, but not necessarily about the street. Obviously in describing his life on the streets, Stringer necessarily sheds some light on what street life in general is like. Just as obviously, he also has a few things to say in passing about public policy (he's especially bitter about the "antiseptic Good Samaritanism" of large-scale relief agencies). But the focus of his book is sharing his own experiences living on the street.

And this takes us to the second point: Stringer's writes about selected experiences. He's not really trying to tell a neatly packaged story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. (Philosophers might describe his approach as "phenomenological.") I don't know why Stringer chose to write about the episodes in his life he did. Some of them are probably consciously chosen; others may've forced themselves onto the empty page. But the point is that they're vignettes, not sequential episodes that together tell a full-fledged story.

For my money, the vignettes are wonderfully written. Their minimalist style sets an almost photographic tone: to the point, revelatory, unsentimental, sometimes grim. Stringer successfully resists the temptation to demonize or romanticize.
