My favorite jQuery book

I have purchased / borrowed other books on the subject but this one did it for me. I'm only four chapters in and already more confident using the jQuery online documentation and writing much more efficient, succinct code.

This is my first title from this publisher / authors. I am very happy with this purchase because...

1. Examples / sample code had just the right amount of detail. Another book I purchased assumed the reader had never programmed before which resulted in wordy, overly detailed explanations and examples that really tried my patience.
2. NOT a cookbook. Explained HOW things worked better than most books. Some just tell you what method to use without explaining why that method works in a certain way.
3. The run-in-browser labs were very helpful. Seeing the results of jQuery selection and manipulation in real time allowed me to experiment with the content rapidly and without writing code from scratch.
4. In the print edition there is a coded coupon to download the digital version for free.

Note: The Chapt 3 lab runs in iframe. By default browsers won't open a local file in an iframe so you will need some sort of security workaround. Since I already had python installed I opted to run a local web server from the example code folder. (one liner --> python -m SimpleHTTPServer). There are also some possibilities for starting a browser from command line with switches turning that security feature off. You will probably need to Google a solution for your browser / operating system to get this to work. It will be worth the effort. It would be nice to see some detailed options / instructions on the book's website and / or just to have this lab hosted online somewhere.

I read this book pretty much from cover to cover

A lot of technical computer books are littered with typos and errors not to mention not working example codes. I read this book pretty much from cover to cover, and I cannot recall any major typo or error in writing. Kudos to authors and reviewers for that. I have tested every single example codes provided, and it all worked as expected. You may say that is the way it should be. But I have purchased many computer books with non-working examples, and I had to figure out how to make it work while comforting myself with the notion that having a book is still better than nothing. In that sense, this book is exceptional.

Just Keeps Getting Better!

Fans of the first two installments of CJ Anaya’s Healer Series will not be disappointed with the third installment, The Grass Cutter Sword. Anaya’s work just keeps getting better, and the stakes continue to rise in this fast paced, intense, romantic adventure..

Book three begins with our heroine, Hope still reliving her past as the prophesied healer and Japanese princess Mikomi. Mikomi comes into her own in this novel, transforming from the meek and mild princess we first met in book two to a fearsome samurai warrior giving aid to the rebel army trying to overthrow her tyrannical and sadistic father, the emperor. In this installment Mikomi risks her life for the rebel cause, battles her inner demons, finds true love, discovers a flaw in the prophecy, fights, loves, laughs, and cries. We are taken on such a fun ride with Mikomi as we learn secrets of the past that will change the course of Hope’s future. What more could you want?! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Anaya’s quick wit and humor once again make this book shine.

For those of you who can’t wait to get back to the present day to see what is happening with our beloved characters from the first book of the series (Hope, Tie, Victor, Angie, Kirby, James, and Chinatsu) and the fate of our modern day world, your time has come! The Epilogue (SMALL SPOILER ALERT) brings us back to present day. Hope is now armed with the memories of her previous life, knowledge only she has about the prophecy, and information about our other favorite characters who are more than they appear to be. The flash forward could have been jarring, but Anaya writes it seamlessly allowing us to easily flow back to the present and bask in Angie’s loyalty and hilarity, Tie’s dreamy eyes, Victor’s strength and determination, and Kirby’s innocent enthusiasm. The trials of Mikomi’s past are now behind us and Hope is back, armed and ready to confront the dangers before her and get to the bottom of the ancient prophecy.

There is only one more installment in Anaya’s Healer series and book three is filled with information vital to the story, setting up the overall plot arch while also being full of suspense, drama, adventure, and fun. The Grass Cutter Sword perfectly sets up the final installment and will leave readers in happy anticipation for the last book.

This series has everything. It’s got history, fantasy, magic, curses, Asian mythology, fast paced action, and best of all a centuries-simmering romance between star-crossed lovers. Mikomi and Musubi’s romantic tension is strung so tightly I found myself holding my breath for them.

Of all the three Healer books I’ve read so far, this one captivated me the most; however, the ending of this installment (which I won’t spoil) made me want to go back and savor all of them again. Anaya has done such an incredible job of weaving all three plotlines together even though they time-jump, that I can’t wait to see what the next book holds.

This series is pure energy, and I also love that it’s a clean read. Highly recommended for fantasy and romance readers. I’m giving my hard copy of book one to my teen daughter so she can get started on them.

I don't want to wait!

Once again, it isn't often I find a series that keeps me entertained for more than one book, but the Healer series has kept me enthralled for three consecutive installments! I'm upset I finished the third most this before the next one is due to release.

The Grass Cutter Sword was a continuation of The Black Cherry Blossoms tale of Hope's previous life. We were able to learn of what exactly happened between her, Victor, and Tie and what events led to her death and eventual rebirth.

I highly recommend this next installment of the Healer series and can't wait for the next one!

About the Author

Carrie Stuart Parks has been a professional artist since 1976 and a forensic artist since 1981. In 1986, she attended an FBI class and became a composite artist, later developing a portrait-drawing course for all ages. She is the author of Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces (2003, North Light Books), Secrets to Realistic Drawing (2006, North Light Books) and Secrets to Drawing Realistic Children (February 2008, North Light Books).

Fantastic resource!

I have purchased several other books about drawing recently, however this book is by far the best one I have come across. After reading it I am amazed at how many tips and techniques it contains that none of the other books felt like mentioning. Some of the many great areas of instruction this book covers are:

-Combining from several photo references

-Proper smudging and blending techniques (Even after reading three other books on drawing this is the FIRST one that actually teaches exactly how to do this properly)

-Erasing techniques to enhance your drawings

-Using custom and self-made templates

-The art of measuring

-Enlarging photos

-Measuring curved surfaces

-Using a proportional divider

-Optical indexing

-Compare by tracing

And a lot more! All this and more is just found in the first half of the book. Most of the rest of the book covers specific details with drawing faces and portraits. The problem I have noticed when deciding which book to purchase here is that almost all of them have stellar reviews. This book is far better than any of the other "five starred" drawing books I have found on Amazon. It is perfect for someone that already knows the basics of drawing and can draw fairly decently but who doesn't know very much about how great pencil artists manage to create such awesome drawings.

My other five star rated drawing books are now collecting dust, but this book is rapidly collecting tattered corners from me using it so much. If you are a complete beginner to drawing buy a book like "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", if you are already a great pencil artist and want to polish your skills even greater buy a book like "Drawing Realistic Textures in Pencil", if you are anywhere in between these two extremes with drawing BUY THIS BOOK.

Carrie could teach a rock to draw!

This book is wonderful. I grew up drawing stick figures. With Carrie and Rick's techniques, I have been able to draw faces of my family that actually look like the people. This book is chock full of techniques and helps. When I say that Carrie could teach a rock to draw, I mean that she and Rick do not teach anyone how to draw, they teach people how to SEE...and when you actually see what you are looking at, then you can draw it.

The book also teaches techniques for overcoming the patterns we all have in our heads...the round happy face, the stick arms, all the things that we get stuck on. You will not go wrong with any of her books...I recommend them all. Look at their website, [...] to see all about their books and their classes...wonderful!!

Good, but Biggest isn't always the best

This book is good and the author is great at teaching drawing using book lessons, better than some of the classes I've taken. But this book is more of an overview of the different types of subjects, not too detailed in any one area. If you want really good thorough lessons, try their specific subjects -- I suggest "Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces."

If you're looking for diversified, non-detailed info on most drawing subjeccts, this is good book for that. It covers just about everything, generally.
