dense, informative, and highly useful

This book is designed for professionals who mainly need to use multiple testing measures in order to discern specific weaknesses that contribute to problems children have in learning. For example, if a child is having difficulty reading, the book helps you design a test to figure out what cognitive issue may be impeding their abilities in that area. It includes information on what areas of major intelligence tests reflect particular issues related to core learning capabilities (math, reading, writing, etc.) to aid in test design as well as information on how to interpret data from such testing. It also includes an overview of the theories that go into intelligence testing and what various components are designed to measure, but this overview is not for novices. The book is incredibly dense and deep and is clearly designed for those well-versed in theories of human cognitive capacity and learning. As another reviewer has noted, it is full of jargon and abbreviations that those unfamiliar with the field will have difficulty understanding and reads like an advanced textbook. This is not a short-coming of the book, but simply a statement of fact. It did not detract from my sense that it is a powerfully useful tool in creating or administering cross-battery assessment tests.

The particular strengths of this book beyond the cogent explanations of the theories behind the tests as well as rational critical analysis of the weakness of XBA (cross battery assessment) is the pages and pages of tables that provide handy reference for professionals. A great deal of work has been saved for those who wish to locate particular resources in designing an XBA. The book is also structured with boxed out sections reminding one of or emphasizing certain points. If you don't have time to digest an entire section, skimming a few of these will help you pick up the bullet points pretty quickly. For those who are already versed in the material, this is quite handy.

Though I regard the overall content as being quite good, I cannot give it five stars for a few reasons. The first is the the included software would not run in OpenOffice because the macros failed to work even when I changed security settings to permit them to do so and even though I was running a current version. This may be a specific issue with my PC because I'm not using Excel, but since OpenOffice is a download the software points you to on the CD, I believe it should run under it. Though the software appears to be well-designed in helping to assess scores, I cannot speak to how it works given my issues with it. The other point, ironically, that made me take away a star was that the book spends a significant part of a chapter talking about the software. In my opinion, this is a waste of space in the book and information that could quickly be rendered irrelevant if the authors release downloadable updates of the files in the future. All information regarding software should be on the CD or on the site devoted to the book, not in the print version of the book itself.

If you have no experience with testing or theories related to human cognition, this book is going to be far too difficult for you to digest. If you are a professional who needs to learn how to deal with XBA or wants a reference guide, this is an excellent resource worth having in your library.

One of the main problems I used to find when others assessed my students was how to interpret their findings. Yes, I was familiar with all the tests, but exactly what were they looking for/at? I knew a child's general capabilities, but the Cross-Battery Assessment (XBA), "a method of assessing cognitive and academic abilities and neuropsychological processes," is much more specific, looking at a broad base of cognitive abilities. Not only would one who is doing the testing benefit from this expansive book, but also the teacher or counselor who needs to interpret and work with it. Yes, much of the test data is theoretical, but can have practical applications if one knows how to work with the material.

For example, when looking at an intellectual disability (ID) and a coexisting learning disability (LD), pinpointing deficits would have helped me formulate realistic goals that could be included in the IEP. There are numerous informative sidebars interspersed throughout this book in the form of tables, "Rapid References," and prompts that help and remind one to incorporate specific assessments into the formula. The ability to interpret test results can be critical. I used to assess students, but also had to spend more time with other teachers discussing what my results meant than it did to do the assessment.

The XBA approach is based on the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory, one that is thoroughly covered in the overview. Historically there has been a wide chasm between "intellectual theory," testing and useful application. Hopefully the XBA will be able to help classroom teachers, psychologists, mental health workers, and others utilize this material. The expansive references listed at the end of each chapter, the appendices, and the CD, are excellent. This is definitely a reference that will help practitioners interpret/utilize/share the XBA cognitive ability results with other professionals who will be working with the results. The material is set up in a very easy to work with, accessible manner.

Comprehensive

This is a comprehensive examination of cross battery assessment. It is well researched but dense and dry. There are many charts and a substantial portion of the book contains the appendices. These are extremely helpful in clarifying the text material. There is also a cd which contains interactive spreadsheets.

This book is designed for professionals and assumes a certain understanding of the concepts and methodology employed in administration and analysis of these assessments. This is a pity as the material would be of service to others, including parents and others dealing with learning disabilities. I applaud the inclusion of the chapter on addressing cultural and linguistic differences.

While valuable to professional, the material is too obtuse for the layman. Recommended for the target audience.

There are much better options.

This text is absolutely terrible. There are a great number of contradictions, and untrue statements. I realize that this is a first edition, but I can not believe that any knowlegeable fire service personnel reviewed this book before it was published. The IFSTA 2nd edition or Brannigan's 4th edition are both much better choices. To the fire chiefs out there that are choosing books for promotional exams: Do not choose this one! I couldn't wait to get to the end. The trouble is, now I have to go back and try to make sense of the many contradictions and mistakes. The worst part is that a great deal of basic and important information that should have been included was left out.

A very detailed and exhaustive text on building construction. This book goes a long way to bring all aspects into play so the firefighter can understand building construction very well.... I am still in the process of finishing the book but it appears to be very good.

Being a firefighter involves a pretty wide range of "Knowledges". Nobody could say that they know everything or else that they are self-confident 100% in each areas of "Knowledges". For my part, building construction was (and is still!) an area that I have to study hard. This book, is an excellent tool. Even if my primary spoken language is french (I sure have some basis in english...), I can say that I have improved my knowledge of building construction with the help of that great book!

Hélène Desportes, born in 1620, was the first child of French parents to be born in Quebec and to survive. For nine years, she lived in Samuel de Champlain’s Habitation. In 1629, the little settlement was captured by the English. Hélène, along with the majority of the other French settlers, was put on an English ship and taken to France. She returned to Quebec in 1634 and spent the remainder of her life in the little colony. She was married twice, had fifteen children, and seventy grandchildren. No portrait of Hélène exits. There are no memoirs, no diaries, nor any letters to guide the biographer. Nevertheless, there are public records and other primary sources from which we are able to piece together her life. This, then, is her remarkable story, set against the backdrop of France’s efforts to establish a colony in the New World along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

Hélène's World includes a lot of the history of early Quebec and French colonizing efforts along the banks of the St. Lawrence River in the New World.  The stories and traditions of seventeenth-century Quebec and France are relevant.  We can better understand Hélène and her French-Canadian neighbors when we know something about the world in which they lived. People are likely to have more in common with their peers than with preceding and future generations. Their daily activities, homes, diet, clothing, and challenges faced, as well as their religious and social values, generally reflect the realities of life and the societal customs for their time and place.

Hélène's World is an admittedly imperfect picture of Hélène Desportes. We can only surmise what she was thinking or feeling. In reality, all biographies are incomplete. We can never know all of the hopes, sorrows, and dreams of another individual. Hélène left no diary, no letters. If we limit ourselves to the official records from church and civil archives, we are drawing a stick figure. Seeing Hélène within the historical and cultural context of the world which she inhabited adds substance to her story and rounds out the picture we have of her life.

About the Author
Susan McNelley, with her Masters in the Humanities, has long been interested in women’s stories, particularly those occurring in other places and in other times. She has also been researching family history for some thirty years. A few years ago, she was able to trace her ancestry back to seventeenth-century Quebec and to Hélène Desportes. Thus began a quest to learn more about what life was like for the early colonists. Hélène’s World, thoroughly researched and documented, is the fascinating story of Hélène Desportes and the other seventeenth-century French-Canadian pioneers.

Helene's World - rare insight into the life of an "ordinary" woman living through extraordinary times

I was so glad to find and purchase Helene’s World by Susan McNelley. The book, tracing the likely life story of Helene Desportes in early New France, was enlightening, enjoyably written, well documented and of special interest to me as a student of history and genealogy. The book filled in and tied together many of the bare facts of history, giving them a narrative and a context. For me, it answered many questions about the pioneer experience, with insights on women, religion, the native population, the situation in France, and conditions of those who survived the first years in New France. Without fanfare, McNelley gives Helene her due for enduring and contributing to the establishment of the colony. I am also a descendent of Helene’s, through her daughter Francoise Hebert and her son Alphonse Morin. French Canadians are fortunate to have so much of our ancestry documented, but the actual story remains quite unknown. McNelley has done an impressive job to illuminate the lives and people of early Canada, who lived at such a precarious and yet fascinating time.

French Canadians will love this book

This book will appeal to French Canadians researching their family trees because almost everyone has Hélène Desportes in their lineage. General readers who enjoy history will enjoy this book because it clearly presents the founding of Québec. It was so easy to imagine how difficult life was in the New World for Europeans, many who came from urban environments. That there are so many Franco-Americans today is a testimony to their perseverance. The book is well cited, and Susan McNelley also provided a synopsis of what happened to Hélène's children.

"Helene's World": A wonderful introduction to the early history of New France

This engaging introduction into the world of the first French colonists of Quebec, invites the reader to enter the everyday world of the colonists, the challenges and the triumphs of surviving and flourishing in this new and alien environment. Written from the perspective of the life of the first girl born in the new colony, it makes the adventure of establishing and adapting European culture to the "new world" very accessible to modern readers. Important, but often neglected aspects of the lives of the colonists, namely securing sufficient food, and, extended family relationships and social bonds, are clearly brought out. Since most histories of New France focus on the missionary efforts of the Jesuits among the Amerind population, the fur trade, or the military/strategic aspects of French colonial rule, this is a fresh approach, comparable to a "family history", at the same time introducing the important aspects of Amerind relations, missionary and other religious aspects of 17th century Colonial life, as well as the effects of the fur trade, relations with the Mother Country, and the characters of Colonial administration.
I think that "Helene's World" should be required reading in all secondary and collegiate-level Introduction to American History classes.
And, as is the case in all really well-written introductions, the reader is drawn to the bibliography and the desire to learn more!

Bruce A. Marlowe
Bruce A. Marlowe earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he also completed two years of postdoctoral training in neuropsychological assessment. He is the co-author (with Marilyn Page) of Creating and Sustaining the Constructivist Classroom (Corwin Press) and of a 6- part video series entitled, Creating the Constructivist Classroom (The Video of Journal Education). He is also the co-editor (with Alan Canestrari) of Educational Psychology in Context: Readings for Future Teachers. He has taught at the elementary, secondary and University levels and is currently Professor of Educational Psychology and Special Education at Roger Williams University.

Canestrari, Ed.D, Boston University, a veteran social studies practitioner and Professor of Education at Roger Williams University, is co-editor (with Bruce Marlowe) of Educational Foundations: An Anthology of Critical Readings (Sage) and Educational Psychology in Context: Readings for Future Teachers (Sage). Educational Foundations was awarded the 2005 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Award. Canestrari had a long career in public schools and universities as a history teacher, department chair, adjunct professor at Rhode Island College, and mentor in the Brown University Masters of Teaching Program. He was the RI Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 1992.

Good basic intro with a focus

Blundell has taken a famous work of art, on the Acropolis, at the heart of Classical Athens, and used it to introduce and discussion women's roles in the city at its height of power. While specialists may disagree with some ideas and therefore profit from considering her take on classical women, her approach is also enticing enough and short enough to keep undergraduates interested. I think this is a great book to use in a women's history course or a course focused on the classical period. Needs better citations overall.

Aernoud Bourdrez is a lawyer and negotiator, specializing in copyright. As a lawyer, he began his career at Allen & Overy, after which he worked in H�cker lawyers. In 2003, Bourdrez Use Intellectual Property BV (Use-IP), a niche firm in the field of copyright. As a lawyer Bourdrez represents known and unknown photographers, artists, designers, architects and advertising agencies.

Bourdrez advised in conflicts in over 35 countries. In 2008 Bourdrez was named by Quote one of the '25 high potential lawyers under 40 ".

Besides his work as a lawyer, Bourdrez collects art fanatically, he runs a marathon now and then, and he continues to be amazed by the number of conflicts that remain simmering.

With A Proviso, I Recommend this Book

The author says that with his book you will be able to handle almost any conflict simply. That is quite a statement. However, it is not true. Now, my saying that his statement is not true is also quite a statement. First, I want to say that many of the observations and tactical pieces of advice the author gives are workable, quite workable. However, the author does not know what makes then workable. This is quite evident for the reason that no particular tactic or observation is complete. To be complete the source principle would have been fully observed and stated. Lots of tactics exist for lawyers to use. Rarely, however, if ever, is the tactic fully informed by the source principle so that it works every time. In not giving the source principle for his observations and tactics the reader will never fully grasp or be able to apply his advice to be able to handle almost any conflict simply and thus the consistently. Plus, the book, because the source principles are not fully reflected in his observations and tactics needs to be read in conjunction with a book which contains the sources principles from which all his observations (partial) and tactics derive. That book is Sun Tzu: The Technology of War. Sun Tzu said that the number of tactics which can be derived from his laws of conflict are infinite. With Sun Tzu: The Technology of War understood, one would know what was truly workable in this book because one would have the principles these the author's observations and tactics are based upon. So, I recommend this book as a book of tactical ideas. But without Sun Tzu: The technology of War, Think Like a Lawyer Don't Act Like One cannot live up to the author's claims of consistent workability. The book title says Think like a Lawyer, yet,if one does not know the fundamental principles of conflict resolution as laid out in Sun Tzu: The Technology of War one will not be able to think like a lawyer but only be able to Act like a Lawyer. Thus, with the proviso that Sun Tzu: The Technology of War be used in conjunction with this book, I recommend this book.

waste of time and money

This book is completely irrelevant does not give you any information and it is a little less then common sense series of phrases that you can find anywhere in the internet or talking with acquaintances. My advice don't even waste your time looking inside the book. The kindle version is dreadful. Difficult to read and you can't use any of the kindle features. You will regret it if you buy it.

very disappointing book

Not what I expected. Short and pointless. Gives very general terms. I was expecting some tactical and strategic cases . In general this information is very basic and if you have negotiated anything your life you will know 50% or more of this material. Some points have humor to them.
