A substantial guide to raising girls.

It is tempting to beat a drum once the topic of child rearing arises: growing human beings may strike us as important.

On the other hand, training children to cope, to succeed, to climb the highest mountain, can be captivating.

To me it seems that Biddulph's priority in a very sound book would be the former. Me too.

The difference (between him and me) is that Biddulph really knows what he is talking about.

His girls will thrive and will do well as school and in life, without being the world's leading mathematicians at age 3.

They will have the chance of living better lives than their ancestors.

He's not a Tiger Pop. His girls are not extensions of his ego. Thank goodness.

Not bad

This book is informative though there is nothing groundbreaking with regards to the information or strategies. Steve lost me the minute he suggested a party be thrown for girls when they start menstruating with grandmothers and aunties. I would encourage Steve to speak to every woman who recalls being 13 and get some feedback on this. Most 13 year olds would be mortified. Perhaps a private celebration between mother and daughter would be better.

About the Author
Alan Paton, a native son of South Africa, was born in Pietermaritzburg, in the province of Natal, in 1903. Paton's initial career was spent teaching in schools for the sons of rich, white South Africans, But at thirty, he suffered a severe attack of enteric fever, and in the time he had to reflect upon his life, he decided that he did not want to spend his life teaching the sons of the rich. He got a job as principal of Diepkloof Reformatory, a huge prison school for delinquent black boys, on the edge of Johannesburg. He worked at Diepkloof for ten years, and at the end of it Paton felt so strongly that he needed a change, that he sold his life insurance policies to finance a prison-study trip that took him to Scandinavia, England, and the United States. It was during this time that he unexpectedly wrote his first published novel, Cry, the Beloved Country. It stands as the single most important novel in South African literature. Alan Paton died in 1988 in South Africa.

Chapter 1

There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass-covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it. The road climbs seven miles into them, to Carisbrooke; and from there, if there is no mist, you look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa. About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu, on its journey from the Drakensberg to the sea; and beyond and behind the river, great hill after great hill; and beyond and behind them, the mountains of Ingeli and East Griqualand.

The grass is rich and matted, you cannot see the soil. It holds the rain and the mist, and they seep into the ground, feeding the streams in every kloof. It is well-tended, and not too many cattle feed upon it; not too many fires burn it, laying bare the soil. Stand unshod upon it, for the ground is holy, being even as it came from the Creator. Keep it, guard it, care for it, for it keeps men, guards men, cares for men. Destroy it and man is destroyed.

Where you stand the grass is rich and matted, you cannot see the soil. But the rich green hills break down. They fall to the valley below, and falling, change their nature. For they grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is coarse and sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept, or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men, guards men, cares for men. The titihoya does not cry here any more.

The great red hills stand desolate, and the earth has torn away like flesh. The lightning flashes over them, the clouds pour down upon them, the dead streams come to life, full of the red blood of the earth. Down in the valleys women scratch the soil that is left, and the maize hardly reaches the height of a man. They are valleys of old men and old women, of mothers and children. The men are away, the young men and the girls are away. The soil cannot keep them any more.

Paton's creative and writing genius comes to a fore in Cry..

When first published in 1948 in apartheid South Africa, Cry, the Beloved Country raised more than eyebrows as a powerful book about the power of unity and an author's unflinching hope of a future where segregation no longer exists. The book summoned feelings of pride, optimism, and anticipation of a long-desired goal. But Paton's lyrical, poetic prose is not your typical run-of-the-mill anger evoking story about discrimination. The story is a humanizing experience that evokes feelings of sympathy and understanding, not hatred for a system so blatantly wrong.
In Cry, the Beloved Country, readers feel an uncanny connection to three things: the land, an old black rural priest searching in a corrupt city for his son, and an old white rural man confronting the loss of his son. All three aspects of the book are connected by a common thread. And a great thing about the book is that Paton doesn't feel the need to build up to the emotional climax by setting the readers against a well defined antagonist, or even an antagonist at all; on a micro-scale, the story is a moving tribute to man's inherent dignity; on a macro-scale, the themes and plethora of symbols are applied to man's all-too mortal nature.
This book is also a can't-miss for any fans of poetry who want to read a good work of prose. As the New Republic puts it, Cry, the Beloved Country is "the greatest novel to emerge out of the tragedy of South Africa, and one of the best novels of our time." I would be inclined to agree.

My all-time favorite

Of the (literally) thousands of books I have read in my life, this is still my favorite. I first read it as a freshman in high school (in 1960, when apartheid was still the law of South Africa), and the sheer beauty of the language took away my breath. The words were so powerful that I memorized many portions of the text, just so I would be able to repeat the words aloud whenever I wished. When JFK was assassinated in 1963, I gave a presentation to my senior English class, and began it with the section of this book that starts: "There is not much talking now, a silence falls on them all...." The class was mesmerized at Mr. Paton's eerily appropriate words, and tears were shed. I've always encouraged my own children to read and they are almost as voracious with books as their dad. Needless to say, this is one of the books I highly recommend to them, because of the excellent writing, and I highly recommend it to you for the same reason.

How much can a man love his country? How much can he love his son? His God? Can justice prevail when man cannot? What is forgiveness? Redemption? Grace? To consider all these elements in one novel is not possible. Or is it?

"Cry, the Beloved Country" is all these things and more. It is forgiveness writ large. It is agape love in the doing. It is the story of two fathers, each with a son. One son is the victim of apartheid and is lost. The other is also a victim of apartheid but of the other side. He seeks to find a way to make things better, to make things right. The lost one kills the seeking one. One is African, the other is Afrikaaner, and therein lies the difference and the ultimate. This difference, this ultimate, this absolute are what drove Alan Paton in the writing of South Africa's most famous, most searing novel of the separation of races in all ways.

Absalom Kumalo's life is limited in all ways because he is black South African. Arthur Jarvis is an engineer and has all the privileges of white South Africa, yet he is keen on social justice and works to bring it to pass. What irony then that the one without kills the one seeking to bring justice. However, it is this very irony that brings their fathers to friendship, to a bonding of black man and white man.

Umfundisi is the black priest (not Catholic) of a simple, poor church in a village located near the home of the rich landowner and farmer, James Jarvis, who really does not know his son until he is dead. It is the getting to know his son that he connects with the African, and the father becomes the son in the ways of love and forgiveness. The umfundisi is one of my favorite characters in all literature I have read because of his humility and reverence.

This novel, published in 1948, remains as one, even today, apropos to race relations, to their very real potentials and actualities. Mutual respect, sincerity, forgiveness, and grace all come to the fore in this most magnificent, lyrical novel.

It would be on my Top 10 list of books I would take if marooned on the proverbial deserted island.

I compared this "2nd edition" with the 1994 original 1st edition (available in like-new condition for about 1/4 price of the 2nd edition)

ONLY DIFFERENCE is publisher merely appended a mostly worthless 50-page chapter on "Design for Enhanced Recyclability and Sustainability"

THEY CHANGED NOTHING ELSE. The first four-hundred fifty pages are COMPLETELY UNREVISED. Pathetic.

So just go buy the 1st edition for about 1/3 to 1/4 the price. (ISBN-10: 1569901295, ISBN-13: 978-1569901298)

This Author is just amazing, I have waited for part 2 for some time and she starts it off right where the other stopped.Liam and Cait have a troubled relationship with lies, trust and a troubled family past. This book will have you mad, crying, yelling and falling in love..but hey don't take my word for it...Read it......you can that me later...

Amazing!!! I absolutely loved it. This story picks up pretty much where b1 ended. Poor Cait is a devastated mess. She feels horrible that Liam is under the impression that she betrayed him and would love a chance to reconcile. When fate brings them together its explosive! I love watching these these two find their way. This story is awesome & smoking hot!

I absolutely loved this book! I was completely hooked from page one and couldn't put it down. There were so many twists and turns and WTF moments throughout the whole book. Just like in book 1 I didn't know if I wanted to attack Liam in all is alpha sexyness or slap his cocky a$$. The wait for this book was well worth it!

In The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman has created a charming allegory of childhood. Although the book opens with a scary scene--a family is stabbed to death by "a man named Jack” --the story quickly moves into more child-friendly storytelling. The sole survivor of the attack--an 18-month-old baby--escapes his crib and his house, and toddles to a nearby graveyard. Quickly recognizing that the baby is orphaned, the graveyard's ghostly residents adopt him, name him Nobody ("Bod"), and allow him to live in their tomb. Taking inspiration from Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Gaiman describes how the toddler navigates among the headstones, asking a lot of questions and picking up the tricks of the living and the dead. In serial-like episodes, the story follows Bod's progress as he grows from baby to teen, learning life’s lessons amid a cadre of the long-dead, ghouls, witches, intermittent human interlopers. A pallid, nocturnal guardian named Silas ensures that Bod receives food, books, and anything else he might need from the human world. Gaiman breaks your heart - and you'll love him for it

Long the king of fantasy fiction for adults, Gaiman has turned his talented attention to younger audiences lately. In The Graveyard Book, he cements his greatness in YA fiction once and for all.
Gaiman spins the tale of Nobody Owens, a child who escaped the mysterious murder of his birth family and is taken in by none other than the ghosts at the local graveyard. Under the watchful eye of his new, ghostly parents and an otherworldly guardian named Silas, tiny "Bod," as he comes to be known, makes the land within the graveyard his own.
But as he grows, questions arise: why isn't Bod allowed to leave the graveyard? Will the one human girl he met as a small child ever return to visit? Who is searching for this innocent boy, and why does Silas leave him, for weeks at a time, under the watchful eye of taciturn Miss Lupescu? Who - or WHAT - lives deep within the bowels of darkest, most forbidding hillside at the edge of the graveyard?
The complicated answers to all of this and much more Gaiman weaves together into a beautiful, terrifying blanket, and in so doing, he shows his readers that it is only the most porous (and important) of curtains that separates life and death, that magic still exists, and that love cannot be limited by any boundaries, no matter how impenetrable they may seem. Truly, a book for all ages. An instant classic.

Gaiman Pens a Thrilling Write for All Ages

Neil Gaiman once said in an interview that, “Kids are so much braver than adults, sometimes, and so much less easily disturbed. Kids will make their nightmares up out of anything, and the important thing in fiction, if you're giving them nightmares, is to demonstrate that nightmares are beatable.” One of my favorite authors of any genre, Gaiman has proven himself time and again to be the conqueror of nightmares and daydreams and even gods. His story The Graveyard Book is a perfect example of his ability to weave a haunting tale, with fun anecdotes and life lessons that will follow children into their adult years, while still finding a special way to appeal to the adults who will pick the story up to share with their children.
Though the book itself is definitely of the children’s genre, the tone of the book is that of a suspenseful, whimsical nightmare on the brink of adolescence. Told from a third person point of view, the voice of the book in that of a narrator. The opening pages of the story opens up into a grisly scene, outlining why, exactly, the book was targeted towards children older than the fifth grade. “The knife had done almost everything it was brought to do, and both the knife and the handle were wet.” (Gaiman, Pg 6.) A home invasion and triple murder sends a toddler child out into the night in search of adventure. The invader, the man Jack, tracks him to a cemetery, where the child has somehow slipped into the locked graveyard and stands upon a hill. The man Jack managed to find his way to the child, only to have him swept into the mist. Of course, we as readers know that this was really the ghostly inhabitants of the graveyard protecting the boy as requested by the weak spirit of his recently slain mother.
Gaiman has several themes in the story that work together to create a flawless plot that captivates his readers. Some of the more obvious ones are death, the
supernatural, fate versus free will and community. While the death and supernatural themes are easily explained in the cemetery, walking-talking-mythical creature moments, the others are actually just as obvious. It was predicted centuries prior to the time period the book was set in that a child who matched Bod’s description would destroy the Jack’s, a secret society of assassins and criminals. This makes me wonder if the events leading up to the resolution of the story, the removal of the man Jack from Bod’s life, were set in motion long before he was born, or if Bod himself truly did play a part in the entire situation. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and when Bod is given the freedom of the graveyard and taught the tricks of the ghosts (such as fading), the inhabitants pull together to raise and care for Bod as a community, ensuring his safety and education as best they could.
Bod’s story is a simple tale for children, with a twist of complicated ingenuity that leaves you wanting to know more about him. You find yourself heart-broken when Scarlett, his one and only human friend, leaves him in fear, stating that he is “less than human.” And then Silas tells him, after ensuring she forget everything that had happened, that “people want to forget the impossible. It makes their world safer.” (Gaiman. Page 288.)
There is a lesson to be learned as you run through the graveyard with the little orphaned boy, learning letters from the ancient tombstones and history from the oldest of ghosts, and as you sit in the classroom Bod finally attends as he desperately wants to be normal, only to find that he always attracts the strangest of attention. It is important to branch out of your comfort zone, to explore the world around you, and to learn as much as you can about that world. But it is just as important to remember

where your home and heart are, and to understand that sometimes there aren’t always happy endings, and some people just are not meant to be in your life. Neil Gaiman uses his literary prowess to spin a tale of fantasy and reality in a way that steals your heart, and the only true way to realize this is by reading the book. I recommend The Graveyard Book to anyone who wants a good adventure story, with an amazing plot as well.

A beautiful, phantasmagorical book.

This is the story of Nobody Owens and his guardians and friends in a graveyard. They became his protectors and family when he was a toddler and a Man Jack did away with his family, shortly before coming after him to do the same. He grows up among the long-dead people and other supernatural beings. He is protected from the world, but soon his past and his future beckon him into the world of the living. His interactions with beings from both worlds are witty, humorous, moving, and at times nerve-wracking or dangerous. Yet always, these qualities underscore deeper truths about the human. And not-so-human, condition. This is one of Neil Gaiman's finest works for grade-school level kids and up (including adults). He remains one of my favorite tellers of Other Worldly tales. Highly recommended.

Forgotten Genius

Steele MacKaye was one of the most important figures in 19th-Century American theater but he's almost forgotten today. This is his first modern biography -- but it was worth the wait. Sokalski tells the tale of MacKaye's extraordinary innovations in theater and theatrical spectacle -- he's the guy that turned Buffalo Bill's Wild West into a real show -- all of which anticipated cinema practice in one way or another. MacKaye didn't live long enough to see the birth of the movies, but studying his work you can see the aesthetic currents that made the invention of cinema almost inevitable. This is an essential contribution to American cultural studies.

I should add that the book has been published in a handsome edition by McGill-Queens University Press -- with a sturdy sewn binding and numerous well-chosen illustrations. All books should be made this way!
