Excellent for the no-experience programmer

If you have had experience programming in other languages, then this book is not for you. It takes things slowly but surely, demonstrating the basic tenets of programming as well as the specifics of Java. I read it before taking an introductory computer science course and it really put me ahead of almost all of the other students (and I had no real programming experience).
Basically, this book was written for the novice. If novice is too generous a term for you, then this book will be perfect. Even if you only thought Java was another name for coffee and only use a computer to word-process on and want to pick up a hobby or perhaps a job skill, you will benefit from this book. The author, Barry Burd, really knows his stuff. He is able to explain such complicated conceptual areas such as objects, classes and arrays better than my CS 101 prof. He also keeps it lively if things get too abstract by analogies and often throws a joke in a section. The book, as a result, is somewhat entertaining in addition to being informative. He uses language that any lay person could easily understand (but if you want to read this because you are going into a computer science class, it's a good place to start, but you will need another book to help you learn the terminology).
In spite of the stigma attached to the "For Dummies" book series (at least it's not as bad as "The Complete Idiot's guide"), this is a book written for people who just want to get to know the language and write some simple programs (or more). I would highly recommend it to anyone getting started here, as well as Java 2 by the same author.

Easy to follow.

I have never completed a programming book, let alone completed one as quickly as I did this one. I've tried to read other introductory programming books for both Java and C++ and gotten bogged down in the first 1/3 or even 1/4. With this one, I would sit down in front of my computer with eclipse open, tell myself "Okay...you can do it, just one chapter..." and next thing I know I'd be done with 3 chapters. The author does an excellent job of clearly explaining the things he is introducing: What they are, how they work and good examples of what they can be used for.

I think some background info would be helpful to go along with my review.

I am currently 32 years old and learning to program is something that has always haunted/intimidated me. I graduated high school and was determined to become a programmer. I hit a stumbling block early on in the coursework and I "fell off the horse" so to speak. I didn't do a great job of seeking out resources at the community college I was at--people who could give me some encouragement and guidance...hell, they may not have even been there. Point is, I ended up studying IT instead, things turned out relatively fine. I've never been able to shake the feeling that I should try it again, maybe I didn't give myself enough credit back then. I am not saying that I think this book is going to turn me into a programming genius, but it has made me feel like maybe, just maybe I can reach back to my 19-year-old self and give it another go.

Great book whether or not you already have a little programming experience.

This book is awesome.

I'm learning Java for work, and my boss got me a different book on java which was a very serious college textbook. That book is 1100 pages. I tried to start reading it, but I was very intimidated, overwhelmed, and I struggled to understand the concepts. So, I bought this "Beginning Programming" book by Burd, and it saved me!

Burd's book is very easy to understand. Some concepts were tricky, but by the end of the chapter I got it. His pace for introducing new material was perfect. I didn't get overwhelmed or bored.

I had done programming in a different language before, and I was concerned that getting a "Beginning Programming" book would be too elementary. That wasn't a problem. I just skipped over anything that was too basic (e.g. explaining what a loop is). And actually, I didn't end up skipping very much. The book is light-hearted and fun to read. So, I ended up reading almost everything, even parts that were a bit obvious to me.

The coding exercises were great. After only a couple of chapters, I was actually writing and running the little example java programs on my computer. I really felt like I was making progress right away! I would do each sample program exactly like the book showed me, and then I would often play around with it, making little changes and experimenting.

By the end of the book, I had written a couple of programs all on my own using the knowledge from the book. I wrote a little "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game and a "Tic Tac Toe" game. These weren't extensions of the example programs in the book. They were brand new programs I dreamed up to experiment with the concepts I was learning. My point is that the book doesn't just teach the examples, it teaches the tools needed to do it on your own.

I'm an adult, but I think my 14 year old son (who has never programmed anything in his life) would have been able to easily understand this book, and be able to write his own programs by the end. All the concepts were presented in ways that were super easy to understand. This would probably be a great book to get kids interestest in programming.

I totally recommend this book.

About the Author

Lukas Klee, JD, LL.M., Ph.D., MBA, is an international construction law expert, adjudicator and currently head of the legal department at Metrostav a.s., a large construction company based in central Europe. For over a decade Lukas has dealt with international construction contracts (FIDIC) on a daily basis and has participated in large construction projects in the Czech Republic and internationally. When away from the office, he lectures on international construction law, at the Charles University Faculty of Law in Prague, the Czech Technical University in Prague and at the University of Warsaw Faculty of Law.

Over the course of his LL.M. studies at Nottingham Trent University and PhD studies at the Charles University Faculty of Law, Lukas focused on FIDIC forms of contracts. His MBA dissertation at Sheffield Hallam University further examined claim management implementation.

Lawyers embroiled in the task of advising on contractual issues pertaining to international construction projects will welcome the advent of this new book: ‘International Construction Contract Law’ recently published by Wiley Blackwell.

The title is more or less self-explanatory, the contract being the key to the success and ultimately the profitability of large construction projects. Such contracts will continue to proliferate in the foreseeable future in response to the growing need for new infrastructure in so many developing countries.

In his introductory remarks about this book, Shuibo Zhang,
Professor of International Construction Contracts at China’s Tianjin University, reminds us that construction projects are getting ever larger in scope and more complex in technology. So the demand is out there but what pitfalls await the parties?

Large construction projects, especially those involving several countries, require massive human and material resources, complicated by the diverse mix of participants from differing cultural, linguistic and legal backgrounds.

Just why and how the contract in any construction project emerges as so crucial is carefully explained within the 18 chapters of this reader-friendly text, although lawyers are one group of professionals who won’t need to be convinced about the importance of a contract.

Construction lawyers in fact emerge as the key players in these massive endeavours. The book is written not only for them, but anyone who, in the words of the publishers ‘needs to understand the legal and managerial aspects of large international construction projects’.

As Zhang explains, this book is one of the few on the market dealing with this specific topic. It therefore fills a niche in which international construction contracts are usefully and almost uniquely targeted and explained in practical and accessible terms.

The author, Dr. Lukas Klee is an experienced lawyer who has presented what has been described as ‘a treasure chest of knowledge’ on a subject that hitherto has received relatively little attention in legal literature.

Klee initially focuses on the unique nature of the construction industry, including business organization, hazards and risks, contract administration and much more, before moving to an overview of such areas as civil and common law interrelationships, standard forms of contract, dispute resolution, deliveries claims and of course, much more.

It is a must read book for construction professionals. The contents are well presented in simple and practical manner to suite work practice. I personally enjoyed reading the chapter on claims, the case studies on claims and sample letters in the appendices section.

About the Author
Zahid Amjad received his BSc in Chemistry (Honors) and MSc in Chemistry from the University of the Panjab, Pakistan, and PhD from Glasgow University, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was a lecturer at the Institute of Chemistry of Panjab University and served as an assistant research professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, New York. He started his professional career as an R & D scientist. During his more than 30 years at Calgon Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, he has worked in various fields, including water treatment, water purification, cosmetics, home care, oral care, and pharmaceutics, and related fields.
Dr. Amjad has presented numerous invited lectures and participated in symposiums around the world. He has published more than 200 papers, has contributed to numerous book chapters, has edited seven books, and holds 30 US patents. His awards include Induction into the National Hall of Corporate Inventors, EDI Innovation Award, and the recipient of the Association of the Water Technologies’ Ray Baum Memorial Water Technologist of the Year Award.
Dr. Amjad is a member of several societies and has organized several symposiums on crystal growth formation and inhibition, physico-chemical processes at solid-liquid interface, adsorption, desorption, and dispersion. He is the owner of Aqua Science and Technology LLC, Columbus, Ohio, which provides consulting services for industrial water treatment, separation processes, and related technologies. Dr. Amjad currently serves as a visiting professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, Walsh University, North Canton, Ohio.

Kostas Demadis was born in Komotini (Thrace, Northern Greece) in 1967. He received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Athens, Greece in 1990 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Michigan, USA in 1995. His Ph.D. theme was in bioinorganic chemistry (structural and functional modeling of the active site of nitrogenase enzyme). He then moved to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC) for post-doctoral, working on the intricacies of Osmium chemistry. In 1998, he was hired by Nalco Chemical Company as a Senior Chemist in their Research & Development Division, switching research gears and “entering” the water treatment world.
In 2003 Kostas started his appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, in his homeland Greece. He created the Crystal Engineering, Growth & Design Laboratory. Kostas is currently Professor of Chemistry.
Kostas’ research group is interested in a number of projects. Metal phosphonate chemistry (synthesis, characterization and application of metal phosphonate materials), functional hybrid materials, silicon chemistry (modeling of biosilicification mechanisms), water treatment issues (mineral scale inhibition, corrosion control, metal ion absorption), controlled release of active ingredients (in particular phosphonate-based drugs), green chemistry.

About the Author
Robert C. Newman is professor of New Testament at Biblical Theological Seminary in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, and director of the Interdisciplinary Biblical Research Institute there. He holds a doctorate in theoretical astrophysics from Cornell University and an STM in Old Testament from Biblical Theological Seminary. He has done additional graduate work in cosmic gas dynamics at the University of Wisconsin, in religious thought at the University of Pennsylvania, in hermeneutics and biblical interpretation at Westminster Theological Seminary, and in biblical geography at the Institute for Holy Land Studies (now Jerusalem University College). He is an author, coauthor, or editor of numerous books and articles, and a contributor to various works including the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis.

About the Author
Professor Andrew Goudie was Professor and Head of Department of Geography at Oxford University. A distinguished physical geographer, he was awarded a DSc by Oxford University, received a Royal Medal from the Royal Geographical Society, the Prize of the Royal Belgian Academy, the British Society for Geomorphology's David Linton Award (2009) and the Geological Society of America's Farouk El-Baz Award for Desert Research. He has been President of the Oxford University Development Programme, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Delegate of Oxford University Press. He has been President of the Geographical Association, President of Section E of the British Association and Chairman of the British Geomorphological Research Group. Professor Goudie became Master of St Cross College, Oxford, in October 2003, and continues to lecture at Oxford University Centre for the Environment. Since 2005 he has been President of the International Association of Geomorphologists.
