With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. About the Author

Charles "Chick" Judd is Professor of Distinction in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in 1976 from Columbia University. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, Dr. Judd’s research focuses on social cognition and attitudes, intergroup relations and stereotypes, judgment and decision making, and methods of behavioral science research and data analysis.

Gary McClelland is Professor of Psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in 1974 from The University of Michigan. A Faculty Fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Science, Dr. McClelland’s research interests include judgment and decision making, psychological models of economic behavior, statistics and data analysis, measurement and scaling, and mathematical psychology.

Carey S. Ryan is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Professor Ryan taught at the University of Pittsburgh and joined the University of Nebraska faculty in 2001. She has research interests in stereotyping and prejudice, group processes, and program evaluation.

A Fantastic Text for Anyone Interested in Deeply Analyzing Data

This book is a fantastic graduate-level data analysis (statistics) text. The writing style is clear and compelling. It is ideal for the scientist/researcher who want to ask practical questions of their data without being forced into standard statistical recipes. I have been searching for a statistics text like this for nearly 10 years and am very pleased to have found it.
The book focuses you, the reader, on composing powerful, but simply-formed models of the questions you wish to ask of your data. It builds a unified approach to data analysis from first principles rather than presenting the typical hodge-podge of cookbook techniques found in many traditional statistics texts. Instead of trying to fit your data into a recipe (t-test, ANOVA, regression, ANCOVA, etc.) you specify a pair (or multiple pairs) of model equations and then use them to ask quantitative questions of your data. Thus, you spend your time asking questions of your data not forcing it into some pre-determined recipe which may be an ill fit. In addition to answering standard "recipe" questions, with this approach you can easily generate and answer questions that fall between the standard recipes, but that are quite valid to ask.
The text presents exactly as much math as necessary to understand the tools, but not more: it does not require a heavy mathematical background. The authors use the text in a graduate level psychology class, but it the book is applicable to those with a more or less quantitative background.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deep analysis of whatever data might cross your desk.

From someone who "ate the dogfood"... WOOF!!!

I'm not going to write a long review of the book itself because C. Long expressed the immense virtues of this book perfectly--I just wanted to share my experience with it.

I was a student of Drs. Judd and McClelland in a year-long graduate level stats (oops! "Data analysis") course. Although this was nominally a Psychology course, its qualities were so famous that people came from departments all over the University to take it, such as Education, Science, Business, and others. I've taken stats a number of times over the years, and never really "got it"--it was all so mysterious with all these seemingly different test types. This was the first course in which I actually completely understood the underlying concepts! Believe it or not, it made statistics and data analysis exciting! I haven't actually used these techniques now in a couple of years, but have recently had need to brush up and start using them again. All the basic concepts are as fresh in my mind as the year I took this course, and I'm confident I'll be up to speed very quickly with just a quick refresh browse of the book.

I can't recommend this text highly enough!

Excellent book with a buggy kindle edition

I loved this book. I've struggled with stats in a number of classes before but this one finally clicked. The focus on model comparisons as a unifying framework means that everything builds neatly on everything else and ties together in predictable ways. Other stats classes have thrown grab bags of ideas and formulae at you but this book does a great job of showing how there is really only one true formula and everything is either an estimate of that formula or trying to make it apply only to a specific situation instead of a more general form.

My two qualms with it are that the language used is different from what many other stats books use so it can be tough to find other resources online and problems with the kindle edition. Sometimes the wrong formulae is present, sometimes it can't correctly render special characters, and other little problems like that.

How an ancient North American civilization was plundered in the twentieth century

When a group of relic hunters drove their picks into a lost Indian burial crypt in eastern Oklahoma in 1935, they unearthed a vast treasure trove of Mississippian art—considered by many at the time to be America’s answer to King Tut’s Tomb. A Cautionary Tale of Archaeology and Hard Times (From Ahadada Books)

David La Vere's Looting Spiro Mounds has the informality of a great afternoon conversation at the local coffee shop. La Vere is the guest who knows just about everything there is to know about what used to be termed the "Southern Death Cult" but is now called, less dangerously, the "Southern Cult"--a complex of artistic motifs, architectural styles, burial characteristics, and ritual behaviors among North American Native Americans dating from around the first century A.D. Archaeologists call this the Missisippian period, but most people of the 19th and 20 centuries knew this as the time of "the Mound Builders" and invented all kinds of strange tales about Europeans, Egyptians, Extraterrestials and just about everybody else building the massive structures at Cahokia, Etowah, and Spiro, Oklahoma--the subject of this book. La Vere gives us the low-down on just what went on at Spiro, beginning all the way from the first paleo-Indian inhabitants to the final ritual actions of a handful of elite rulers and priests who built a remarkable burial chamber in the center of the largest mound before abandoning the city c. 1450 because of radical climate changes. La Vere speculates that the creation of this tee pee within a tee pee-shaped chamber filled with "power" objects and the bones of powerful ancestors was a last-ditch effort to somehow focus the sacred energy of the group and adjust the weather back to within more manageable parameters. When the prayers and other rituals enacted atop the mound did not have the desired effect, everyone gave up and left.

As La Vere tells us the story of ancient Spiro that archaeologists have patched together, he also recounts a cautionary tale (really a tragedy) of archaeology and economics that took place in the 1930's when a group of down-and-outers decided to create a mining company to recover saleable objects from the Mounds. Depression-era American witnessed the rise of arrowhead collecting as a hobby along with big-budgeted local museums eager to purchase impressive examples of "Indian" artifacts for their shows. Laudably, La Vere points out the paradox that a mere fifty years earlier the American government was busily stamping out the last traces of Native-American culture, yet somehow prehistoric artifacts--dating from before the time of Sitting Bull, the Trail of Tears, Tecumseh and the other "trouble makers"--had become fair game for amassing and display. The end result of this dangerous mixture of available money in a time of general poverty, with a dash of the anti-intellectualism celebrated in American culture, was the spectacle of these uneducated half-dozen men destroying the great burial chamber at Spiro to sell the incredible artifacts that they haphazardly recovered for mere pennies on the dollar. In addition, to keep the Oklahoma state archaeologists from recovering more material, they spitefully dynamited what was left of the chamber. We will never know for sure what the original burial chamber was like though La Vere give us all the details of what those who were actively involved saw. No photographs were taken. No drawings were done. The opening of the mound was just--apparently--a scrimmage of greed. Think of all the information that was forever lost.

Some impressive artifacts were recovered, however, and photographs of these are included in the book. I was most intrigued by the fact that examples of 500 year old cloth were found and preserved.

This book is lucidly written in an attractive, informal style. Mr. La Vere can tell a story well--even one as saddening as this.

Very impressed on this book on the Mississppian civilization

This book was very informative on the western Mississippian citystate from the middle ages in North America. I had no idea that such a civilization with earthen pyramids existed in Oklahoma from the time period of 900-1400 AD.

Fantastic!

A little lie helps Megan find a "Man to Do." One leg in a brace from a long ago car accident, she feels like it keeps people from looking at her twice. Enter the lie: she decides to have a friend put her bad leg in a cast, then goes on vacation to a ski lodge and says she has a broken leg! On the very first night, Luke Webster notices.
A hot game of truth or dare has Luke asking for a second encounter, then another...and another! His reaction to Megan's leg (when he finds out that it's permanent, and that she lied) is very real, and we see his true personality...not just the playboy and the lover. He's very sweet and considerate, and not half as selfish as he believes himself to be; he just doesn't think his problems through. Luckily, he has a friend with a lot of common sense to keep him from acting like such a man! :-)
The couple is very real-life. Megan is bright and sassy, down-to-earth, and adventurous. Luke - well, he's your typical playboy - with a practical side. There are no akward moments, and author Jo Leigh carries the story of with such aplomb, I forgot that I wasn't watching it as a movie! The chemistry is perfect, and their story is enduring; you know they're going to have problems in the future, but you also know they'll get through them.
My first book by Jo Leigh; bet I'll be getting more!

Kuldeep Singh has held the position of Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Hertfordshire for over twenty years, where he teaches linear algebra to entry level undergraduates. He is also the author of Engineering Mathematics through Applications (Palgrave Macmillan), a book that used widely as the basis for undergraduate studies in many different countries. He hosts and regularly updates his Maths for All website.

Don't read on a tablet.

(Please note that I am reviewing the Kindle version, although the review says I'm reviewing the paperback.)

I've only been through the first 20 pages so far and will write a full review after finishing the book. The first point I want to make is that this book is no good on a tablet (at least, on a 7" Android tablet). The formatting is inconsistent and the formulas are frequently (but not always!) small graphics that can't be scaled. I won't complain about this because it was noted that this book was optimized for large screens. On a laptop it looks perfect. Expect to read the Kindle version of this book on a computer.

I can say this much so far. The book starts out from a totally practical, "here is why you should care" perspective, and I love it. Most linear algebra books and courses begin by leaping straight into some severely abstract things. (Strang's course is an example.) This book begins with real-world problems, and then uses basic algebra to tackle them. Only after having gone through this is the concept of a matrix introduced, and the reason for introducing it is to demonstrate an easier, faster, more reliable way to solve the real-world problem that was approached with algebra.

I took an online course in programming linear algebra in python, and so it suffered from two problems from the perspective of a linear algebra newbie, 1) the real focus was on programming, not linear algebra and 2) the presentation of linear algebra was as abstract as you can possibly be. If I had gone through just the first 20 pages of this book first, so much would have been clear to me and the course would have been so much easier.

UPDATE: I'm now about 1/3 of the way through the book. So far, it's still the single best resource I've seen for learning linear algebra. It does get abstract and confusing at times, and this is taking into account that I've worked with several other resources, including an online course, another book, and a lot of Khan Academy videos. If you're brand new to linear algebra, the first chapter might seem fairly easy, but then it's going to get rough.

Nevertheless, although it's slow going for me, I have generally been able to figure out what the text was getting at. There are a few points so far that have left me puzzled. I haven't yet looked at the detailed answers to all of the exercises yet, so those may help.

UPDATE 2: I got a Paperwhite e-reader recently and I spent some time paging through this book on that. This was a by no means comprehensive analysis, but it appeared that everything was at least legible on the Paperwhite. Some of the tables had some fairly small text, but nothing I couldn't read. So it's probably feasible to read this on a Paperwhite.

probably the best book in linear algebra

I've read other books on linear algebra such as those from Strang but none of them are as good as this one. The topics are presented in a very organized and understandable way. I also love that the author provides a detailed solutions to all the exercises. It was very helpful.

Well worth it

I used it in conjunction with my other materials for a L.A course. I actually prefer this to the other text, especially as the order of presentation seems more sensible. Also, if you have trouble with proofs, this book does an *amazing* job of breaking proofs down. It even discusses the strategies chosen. If you're used to reading proofs, that can sometimes seem a little wordy, but since many (most?) students struggle with proofs I admire the integration of the technique of proofs along side the proofs.

I got it as a Kindle doc, and as other users have noted it's challenging on a Kindle reader due to scaling issues. It's more an issue of having the wrong instrument for the text than a problem with the text. I used my full sized tablet, and that's where it shines. I recommend it highly!
